On the 27th, the World Intellectual Property Organization announced the top 100 technology clusters in the 2024 Global Innovation Index, with the "Shenzhen Hong Kong Guangzhou" cluster ranking second globally for five consecutive years. A spokesperson for the Hong Kong SAR government stated that the rankings released by the World Intellectual Property Organization continue to highly recognize the leading position of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area in the global innovation and technology field, and the SAR government welcomes this. The spokesperson stated that the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area International Science and Technology Innovation Center holds an important strategic position in the national science and technology innovation system. Hong Kong will continue to actively promote the development of science and technology, strengthen basic research capabilities, improve the local science and technology ecosystem, accelerate the transformation and commercialization of scientific research achievements, promote new industrialization, and adapt to local conditions to accelerate the cultivation of new quality productivity. At the same time, the SAR government will also strive to make good use of its own advantages, strengthen innovation and technology cooperation with other cities in the Greater Bay Area, and jointly create a more complete and globally competitive innovation and technology industry chain, making new and greater contributions to the country's high-level technological self-reliance and self-improvement. The World Intellectual Property Organization identifies and ranks regions leading in global technological invention and innovation activities by examining the density of patent applications and articles published in scientific journals. In this year's ranking, the density of patent applications per million people in the "Shenzhen Hong Kong Guangzhou" cluster was 2303 from 2019 to 2023, while the density of articles published in scientific journals from 2018 to 2022 was 3469 per million people, both of which have increased compared to the previous cycle.
