On the afternoon of the 25th, Hong Kong Children's Hospital held a press conference to announce that the Guangdong Province Umbilical Cord Blood Hematopoietic Stem Cell Bank had sent a sample of umbilical cord blood hematopoietic stem cells from Guangzhou to Hong Kong Children's Hospital in the morning of the same day. The plan is to perform a transplant surgery on a 5-year-old girl with severe thalassemia in October this year. Jian Yiling, Acting Executive Director of Hong Kong Children's Hospital, introduced at the press conference that a 5-year-old girl receiving treatment at the hospital has severe beta thalassemia and needs to use umbilical cord blood stored in the Guangdong Province umbilical cord blood hematopoietic stem cell bank when the patient's younger brother was born for transplantation. In June of this year, the blood bank quickly established a working group after receiving help from family members, contacted Hong Kong Children's Hospital, and maintained close communication. It is reported that with the assistance of multiple departments, the Guangdong Provincial Umbilical Cord Blood Hematopoietic Stem Cell Bank submitted an application for the export of umbilical cord blood hematopoietic stem cells to the General Administration of Customs on July 12th, and successfully obtained the approval document from the General Administration of Customs in just three working days. Zhou Haiyang, Director of the Clinical Application Center of Guangdong Province Umbilical Cord Blood Hematopoietic Stem Cell Bank, stated that this is the second cross-border shipment of umbilical cord blood to Hong Kong completed by Guangdong Province Umbilical Cord Blood Hematopoietic Stem Cell Bank. It is also an important leap in the field of umbilical cord blood hematopoietic stem cell application, marking the deepening of cross-border medical cooperation between mainland China and Hong Kong. The Guangdong Province Umbilical Cord Blood Hematopoietic Stem Cell Bank first transported umbilical cord blood across borders to Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong in 2018. (New Society)
