Guangdong Lion Dance Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance and Innovation, Driving Local Economy and Supporting Rural Revitalization
2024-07-15
On July 14th, continuing the hot trend of the High Stake Lion King Competition, the Round Table Conference on the Inheritance and Development of Chinese Lion Dance (Awakening Lion) was held at the Changling Awakening Lion Culture Center in Huangpu District, Guangzhou. On the occasion of China and Malaysia announcing their joint application for World Heritage status for "Lion Dance", dragon and lion associations from Malaysia, Singapore, as well as Guangdong, Hong Kong, Shandong, Zhejiang, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Hainan and other regions of China gathered together to establish the Preparatory Committee for the China Lion Dance Alliance, and jointly discuss the development achievements and future prospects of dragon and lion intangible cultural heritage inheritance. At the roundtable meeting, Zhao Weibin, President of Guangzhou Dragon and Lion Association, shared with everyone the experience of Guangdong lion dance driving local economic development and assisting rural revitalization, which attracted the attention of domestic and foreign peers. Heyuan: Technological innovation helps industrial development. In the process of lion dance culture supporting rural revitalization and fully utilizing regional resource advantages, there have been new innovations in the craftsmanship of lion head tying - the originally complex lion head tying has been divided into 21 processes, corresponding to 21 parts of the lion head. Through training and instruction in group techniques, traditional manual skills that originally took 180 days to master can now be mastered by beginners in just 7-10 days. The innovation of skills from the source not only greatly reduces the threshold for the inheritance of lion head tying techniques, but also significantly improves the efficiency of lion head making. At present, Louzhen Village in Heping County, Heyuan City has established a lion dance and color tying industry. Local villagers have received training and instruction in group skills, with each group specifically learning a process, ultimately achieving rapid adaptation and participating in fully manual assembly line production. According to Zhao Weibin's introduction, the efficiency of lion head tying has been improved by nearly 20 times. Originally, one color tying master could complete one lion head in 5-7 days, but now they can produce an average of 50 lion heads per day, achieving an annual output of 15000 lion heads and increasing production capacity by more than 50 times. The original production model of family style workshops has evolved into workshop style production under the leadership of innovative technology, leading the local lion head tying industry onto the path of industrialization. With the rise of the local rural revitalization industry, some villagers who have gone out to work have gradually returned to their hometowns to contribute to their development and construction. More couples have been able to reunite, and the problem of left behind children has been greatly alleviated. It is reported that from October 2018 to October 2019 alone, Louzhen Village sold nearly 15000 lion dance heads throughout the year, with a turnover of 11.4 million yuan and a profit of 2.47 million yuan. In addition, the surrounding villages of Louzhen Village have also been driven to develop the lion head tying industry, achieving both economic and social benefits, and contributing to the "Millions of Projects". Qingyuan Lianshan: The unique experience of the "Lion Dance Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop" in Heyuan is still being developed and promoted. A signing ceremony was also held on site for the promotion and cooperation of lion dance culture in Changling and Qingyuan, Guangzhou. Lianshan Zhuang and Yao Autonomous County is located at the intersection of Guangdong, Hunan, and Guangxi provinces, with a forest coverage rate of over 85%. It has abundant resources of bamboo, a raw material for lion head tying, and many excellent traditional bamboo weaving artists in the area. The lion dance culture is profound, making it a unique "lion dance intangible cultural heritage workshop". The attending guests look forward to the combination of Guangzhou lion dance and local Zhuang Yao culture, which will help build the Lianshan Liantang Lion Dance Cultural Industry Park, drive local economic development, and assist in rural revitalization construction. Chen Hang, former first level inspector of Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, stated that while attaching importance to the development of cultural industries, we should also do a good job in cultural inheritance, turning "what do I have" into "what do I rely on", and turning resources and advantages into unique skills and signs. After the roundtable conference, several lion dance teams from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Johor, Malaysia also held the World Lion Dance Heroes Association Traditional Southern Lion Exchange Competition. This exchange competition is different from the High Stake Lion King Competition Invitational, as it focuses more on the plot effect of lion dance programs. The lion dance performances of "Spirit Lion Savior," "Towards Tiger Mountain," and "Drunken Green" vividly convey emotions through delicate movements. The drum music is full of ups and downs, and the audience present is engrossed in the exciting plot of traditional lion dance. (New Society)
