Humanoid robots make rapid progress

2024-07-15

With the breakthrough progress of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, humanoid robots are no longer just appearing in science fiction movies, but are gradually entering people's lives and becoming the darling of the technology field. At the recently held 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, a total of 25 humanoid robots were showcased, including not only the "Eighteen Diamond" vanguard array composed of 18 humanoid robots, but also the Chinese debut of Tesla's second-generation Optimus Prime humanoid robot. The exhibition area where humanoid robots are located has attracted a lot of attention. Humanoid robots, also known as androids, are robots designed to mimic human appearance and behavior, integrating various advanced technologies such as AI, high-end manufacturing, and new materials. In recent years, humanoid robots have been continuously upgraded and improved, and the market size has gradually expanded, attracting domestic and foreign technology companies to join in. Tesla announced its humanoid robot program in 2021 and launched its first Optimus Prime humanoid robot in 2022. Currently, the second-generation Optimus Prime humanoid robot can walk flexibly and use visual neural networks and FSD chips to mimic human operations for battery sorting training at Tesla factories. Next, Tesla plans to produce Optimus Prime in limited quantities next year, with over 1000 Optimus Prime vehicles available at Tesla factories to assist humans in completing production tasks. In China, the market for humanoid robots is also booming. From the Fu Liye universal humanoid robot GR-1, the world's first pure electric drive full-size humanoid robot "Tiangong", to the home service humanoid robot "Kuafu", and the world's first full-size open-source universal humanoid robot "Qinglong", domestic humanoid robot applications have covered multiple fields such as industry, healthcare, and home services. According to statistics, China has become the country with the highest number of valid patent applications for humanoid robots, with a total of 6618 applications, an increase of 25 times in 8 years. The continuous improvement of the functions of humanoid robots not only enhances the convenience, work efficiency, and productivity of human life, but also improves medical and health services, enriches education, entertainment experiences, and brings comprehensive and profound changes to human life. At present, the development momentum of humanoid robots is becoming increasingly strong. Although humanoid robots have achieved many achievements in key technologies, demonstrating great potential and application value, their development still faces multiple challenges such as immature core technologies, high manufacturing costs, insufficient application scenarios, and ethical and moral issues. Meanwhile, the accelerated evolution of humanoid robot technology has also led to increasingly fierce competition within the industry. If companies want to gain an advantage in this wave of technology, they should increase their independent research and innovation capabilities, continuously improve the technological level and competitiveness of their products. In addition, it is necessary to control costs and strive for mass production to make humanoid robots truly effective. (New Society)
