Submarine for New China - A Chronicle of the Establishment of the First Submarine Force of the People's Navy

92 year old Xu Ruitian is China's first generation submarine soldier. Although his energy has declined significantly, whenever he mentions the word "submarine", he immediately becomes energetic. In 1950, New China was in a state of great waste waiting to be revitalized. The People's Navy, which has just been born less than a year ago, held an important meeting in Beijing to establish the construction policy of "air, submarine, and fast" as the focus. After the meeting, then Navy Commander Xiao Jingguang found Fu Jize, who was only 32 years old, and entrusted him with a task: to form a study team to concentrate on learning submarine knowledge. Submarine troops are a type of military unit that carries out combat tasks underwater, with good concealment, strong assault capabilities, and the ability to engage in long-term underwater operations. They are an indispensable and important combat force for the great navy. "I was very excited at the time because just one year after the founding of the People's Republic of China, I started building a submarine force." Fu Jize wrote in his memory during his lifetime. At that time, the Navy Party Committee attached great importance to the selection of submarine personnel. All naval forces are taking action. After careful selection, 275 officers and soldiers with firm political stance, high cultural level, and good physical fitness were selected from various fleets, schools, and directly affiliated institutions to form the first batch of submarine learning teams. On the morning of April 26, 1951, a special train carrying study team members arrived at Dalian Station, and 10 military trucks covered in canvas came to transport them to a certain base in Lushunkou. Due to strict confidentiality discipline, the students completely cut off contact with the outside world from the moment they arrived at the base. No communication is allowed, no going out is allowed. The discipline is very strict, and we don't know what to do when we are chosen, we only know it's to carry out tasks. 91 year old veteran Liu Zuogan recalled that his hometown was less than 5 kilometers away from the study site, but his mother had never heard from him. "It is said to have a high level of education, but in fact, the people selected at that time were mostly from elementary or middle school education." 92 year old veteran Mu Ensheng recalled that within three years given by his superiors, he must master more than 20 majors, including navigation, electromechanical, communication, radar, torpedoes, firearms, and nearly a hundred courses. It is this group of officers and soldiers with only elementary and junior high school education that began the Chinese submarine forces to move from "0" to "1". Submarine Construction is a mandatory course. In the first class, the instructor held a submarine model and told everyone that submarines are designed according to Archimedes' laws. "What is Archimedes' Law? Many students are confused," Liu Zuogen said. People are constantly being eliminated and new personnel are being added. In order to seize the "highland" of theoretical learning, the officers and soldiers of the study team learn from each other and learn from each other. During class, I listened to Soviet instructors and after class, I started various cultural foundation tutoring classes and professional theory learning classes. When he completed his theoretical studies and first ventured into a submarine, Muensheng was shocked. Various instruments, equipment, fixtures, thousands of pipelines, and tens of thousands of valves are densely packed and crisscrossed, squeezing the space left for people to the minimum. Beds are often detachable hammocks. Even so, it's not enough to have one person, one bed, and the crew have to take turns sleeping. High temperature, high humidity, and high noise, students are holding drawings and touching pipelines in the narrow cabin, flipping through technical materials day and night. In the cabin, people will be unable to perceive the changes of day and night, and their biological clock will be disrupted. Only a 24-hour submarine clock can tell whether it is day or night now. In 1953, the three-year study period was coming to an end and the graduation exam was approaching. At the most tense time of his studies, Xu Ruitian received a telegram from home informing him that his father had passed away. Xu Ruitian endured the pain and completed the final exam. In the end, the average score of the graduation exam for all students of the submarine learning team was 4.7 points, far above the passing line of 4 points, and they successfully graduated. By the time Xu Ruitian took leave and returned home, his father's grave had already grown lush with grass. On June 19, 1954, with the approval of the Central Military Commission, the Independent Submarine Brigade of the Navy was established, and the first submarine unit of the People's Navy was announced. A long journey begins here. Don't ask me where I am, I can't tell you even if you ask me. We are Chinese Navy submarine soldiers sailing in the boundless ocean... 70 years have passed, and the officers and soldiers of that year have passed away one after another, leaving only a few veterans who are already in their nineties. Their lives are little-known, but this song "The Song of Submarine Soldiers" records their youth and vows. (Lai Xin She)
