On the morning of October 28th, the second "Tsinghua Higher Education Forum" founded by Tsinghua University opened in Beijing. The theme of this forum is "Higher Education for Sustainable Development: A World Perspective and Chinese Practice". Anthony Ohemeng Boama, Assistant Director General of Priority and External Relations for Africa at UNESCO, Guan Peijun, Vice President of the Chinese Society of Higher Education, and Wang Xiqin, President of Tsinghua University, attended the opening ceremony of the forum. The opening ceremony was presided over by Yang Bin, Vice President of Tsinghua University. Anthony Ohmon Boamah congratulated the convening of this forum in a video speech. He emphasized the irreplaceable role of higher education in cultivating sustainable, resilient, and peaceful societies, introduced the actions taken by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in promoting the sustainable development of higher education, and pointed out that a higher education framework should be established that is suitable for the needs of the labor market, in order to alleviate educational disparities, enhance academic mobility, and use technological progress to reshape the global education landscape. In his speech, Guan Peijun pointed out that in the face of a complex and ever-changing world, it is of special significance to think about how higher education can achieve sustainable development and provide ideas for the sustainable development of humanity and the earth. He emphasized the need to adhere to integrity and innovation, and promote the sustainable development of higher education with Chinese characteristics; To adhere to the core mission and accelerate the high-quality development of higher education; We must adhere to reform and opening up, and create a new pattern of foreign exchange and cooperation in higher education; Let the sustainable development of higher education in China go further, more stable, solid, and broader. Wang Xiqin, on behalf of the school, welcomed the attending guests and experts and scholars. He pointed out that in 2022, Tsinghua University established the Tsinghua Higher Education Forum, with the first forum themed "New Role of Universities in a Changing World" and achieving good results. This forum focuses on "Higher Education for Sustainable Development: A World Perspective and Chinese Practice". Currently, the world is standing at the midpoint of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and human society is facing unprecedented challenges. Education plays a fundamental, strategic, and leading role in the development and progress of human civilization, and higher education is the leader of education. Higher education must adhere to global sustainable development, strive for innovation, and develop transcendent education. Higher education oriented towards sustainable development should open up a "timeline" to connect the past, present, and future of humanity; Open the "life axis" and promote harmonious coexistence between humans and nature; Open the "Space Axis" to promote cooperation among countries. Wang Xiqin stated that Tsinghua University has always attached great importance to promoting sustainable development, integrating the concept of sustainable development into various aspects such as talent cultivation, scientific research, social services, and campus construction. Tsinghua is willing to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with global universities, jointly assume responsibilities, and work together to build higher education with higher quality and sustainable development.
