The average temperature of the Earth may warm by 1.5 ℃ in 2023

2023-09-27

According to a recent report from the UK's Nature website, the Earth is heading towards an average temperature of 1.5 ℃ higher than pre industrial levels. Climate models indicate that the likelihood of reaching this threshold by 2023 is now 55%. The number of 1.5 ℃ is the preferred maximum heating limit set by the Paris Agreement. In May of this year, a report from the World Meteorological Organization stated that there is a 66% chance that the annual average temperature increase between 2023 and 2027 will exceed 1.5 ℃. However, some independent research groups predict that the Earth's temperature will reach 1.5 ℃ this year. The Swiss non-profit climate monitoring organization "Berkeley Earth" set a 55% probability of an average warming of 1.5 ℃ in 2023 in its monthly update in August. This is much higher than the less than 1% probability predicted by the team at the beginning of this year. Russell Worth, a climate scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said, "Our analysis is roughly similar to that of the Berkeley Earth organization, where August 2023 was the hottest month on our records, and the likelihood of 2023 becoming the hottest year since 1850 is over 90%." The analysis results of organizations such as NASA are also not significantly different. According to climate science and policy researcher Ori Rogery of the Imperial College of Technology in the UK, a very important reason for the abnormal high temperatures is that the sand and dust content in the Sahara Desert was unusually low in the early summer of the Northern Hemisphere this year, which caused temperatures in the Atlantic to be higher than normal. The possibility of a temperature rise of 1.5 ℃ in 2023 is "quite shocking". (New News Agency)
