On the 30th, the Shaw Prize Foundation announced the winners of the Shaw Prize in 2023 in Hong Kong. Seven international scientists, including Shing-Tung Yau, a Chinese mathematician, won three awards in mathematical science, astronomy, life science and medicine, each of which was worth US $1.2 million. Yang Gangkai, Chairman of the Shaw Award Council and Vice Chairman of the Jury, introduced at a press conference on the same day that the Shaw Award is an international award to recognize scientists who have made breakthroughs in academic scientific research and application, and have had a profound impact on human life. This year's Shaw Prize for Mathematical Science was awarded to Vladimir Drumfeld, a professor at the University of Chicago in the United States, and Shing-Tung Yau, director of the Shing-Tung Yau Center for Mathematical Science at Tsinghua University, on average, in recognition of their contributions to mathematical physics, arithmetic geometry, differential geometry and Keller geometry. Delinfeld participated in promoting the geometric Langlands program, and Shing-Tung Yau was committed to solving the mathematical problems caused by the general relativity and string theory. The Astronomical Award is awarded equally to Matthew Belles, Director of the Centre for Excellence in Gravitational Wave Discovery at the Australian Research Council, as well as Professor Duncan Lorimer and Mora McLaughlin from the University of West Virginia in recognition of their discovery of rapid radio wave bursts. This strong radio burst can release energy equivalent to several days of solar radiation in a few thousandths of a second. The three winners described the first discovery of rapid radio wave bursts in a paper published in 2007. The Life Science and Medicine Award is equally awarded to Patrick Kramer, Director of the Molecular Biology Department at the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences in Germany, and Eva Nogales, Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, in recognition of their pioneering research in the field of structural biology. They visualized the protein mechanisms responsible for gene transcription at a single atomic scale, revealing the steps involved in gene transcription mechanisms. The Shaw Awards were established in 2002 and are managed and executed by the Shaw Awards Foundation. They have been presented annually since 2004. It is reported that this year's award ceremony will be held in Hong Kong in November. (New News Agency)
