Author: Chen Jiaji (associate professor of the Chinese Department of the School of Humanities of Jiangnan University) Gao Zhongtai's "Deep Dive: A Documentary Report on the Research and Development of China's Deep-sea Manned Submersible" (published by Yilin Press in December 2022), records the great process of China's independent efforts to build the pedigree of the deep-sea submersible with full emotion and smooth and bright words. The work pursues the authenticity and objectivity of news, and also pays attention to the expression of subjective experience, which better realizes the unity of authenticity, literariness and storytelling. This work was included in the monthly list of "Chinese Good Books" in December 2022 released by the China Book Review Society. When describing the development process of China's manned deep diving industry, the work covers professional theoretical knowledge and technical concepts, especially around the development of deep-sea manned submersibles, including the formation of system-wide technical solutions, as well as the design, materials, manufacturing, testing and assessment technical standards, which are scientifically and accurately displayed. This is inseparable from the author's early precipitation of the theory related to deep diving. After the "deep dive", it was carried out around important topics such as marine protection, sunken ship salvage, underwater archaeology, and marine biological research. Its narrative extension involved multiple disciplinary perspectives and knowledge systems such as marine science, life science, biology, ecology, and archaeology, but the overall presentation was orderly, clear and thorough. Liu Shiping, a reporter from the Xinhua News Agency of the Jiaolong manned submersible, took a photo. As a news media person, Gao Zhongtai has always followed the dynamics of CSIC 702 Institute, insisted on long-term in-depth reporting, and established a good relationship with the 702 Institute. Before writing this book, in order to understand the story behind the development of the deep-sea manned submersible in detail, he has interviewed many people who participated in the research and development, including designers, manufacturers, divers and scientists. The whole interview process is solid. When describing these characters and describing personal and time experience, the writer mainly adopts the form of direct narration or quotation. Many characters, such as Xu Qinan, the "father of the submersible", Ye Cong, the "hero of manned deep diving", Wang Pinxian, the marine scientist, Ding Kang, the director of the Deep Sea Institute, Hu Zhen, the chief designer of the "Deep Sea Warrior", and Zhang Yi, the first female diver of the "Jiaolong", are vividly and naturally presented to the readers. Their experience, personality and character are deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. In shaping the inner world and growth path of the heroes of the deep dive, the book generally maintains a vigorous and simple narrative style, and adheres to the attitude of conveying science and rigorous writing in the sense of popular science, and at the same time blends a variety of stories and literary elements. For example, when recalling Ye Cong's childhood experience, he recorded that he had a literary complex to write fantasy novels from his childhood, wrote bamboo rafts to solve his mother's urgent needs, built a vegetable garden with bricks on the roof... In many details of life and stories full of childlike innocence, the image of Ye Cong, an active but discontented, diligent and hardworking childhood, came to light; When describing Han Xiqiu, a female scientist, starting from the homonym of the name "Xiqiu" and the Sichuan dialect "balloon", the brilliant character of the balloon is displayed by comparing its light texture with the firm belief that "I will not float in the air, I am the daughter of the sea, and I am destined to sink into the sea in my life"; Academician Wang Pinxian went into the sea at the age of octogenarian and became the oldest diver in the world
