The Ministry of Commerce responded to the discriminatory electric vehicle subsidy provisions of the US Inflation Reduction Act

2022-09-23

On the 22nd, Shu Jueting, spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce, said at the regular online news conference of the Ministry of Commerce that China was concerned about the discriminatory electric vehicle subsidy provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act recently passed by the United States. The relevant measures are based on the conditions such as the local assembly of the whole vehicle in North America as the precondition for providing subsidies, which constitutes discrimination against other imported similar products and is suspected of violating the most favored nation treatment, national treatment and other principles of the WTO. We note that other WTO members have expressed serious concerns about the US measures. Shu Jueting stressed that the United States, as a member of the WTO, should implement relevant investment policies in a manner consistent with WTO rules and maintain a fair competitive trade order. China will continue to track and evaluate the follow-up implementation of the US legislation and take measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests when necessary. (Liu Xinshe)
