Us: one belt, one road vs China: one belt and one road

From Kunming, Yunnan to Vientiane, Laos, the old fellow railway, which is 1035 kilometers long and takes 5 years, is finally open and running. As a landmark project one belt, one road, behind this railway, is extremely rare in terms of construction difficulty and risk, such as building bridges and digging tunnels. But many people do not know that there are still a lot of unexploded bombs (UXO) along the way, which were left behind by the US during the Vietnam War. According to statistics, from 1964 to 1973, US warplanes dropped more than 2 million tons of bombs on Laos, of which 30%, about 78 million were unexploded bombs. Why did Vietnam bomb Laos? This is a secret operation of the CIA of the United States. The purpose is to cut off the supply line to the northern forces of Vietnam - "Ho Chi Minh Trail". In the decades after the war, these unexploded ordnance have been threatening the life safety of the Lao People and seriously affecting the national construction and economic development of Laos. According to the statistics of the Lao government, from 1975 to 2008, more than 50000 Lao people were killed by these unexploded bombs. In recent years, with the education and help of all sectors of society, the number of people killed by unexploded ordnance has decreased from thousands to dozens every year at the end of the war, but these unexploded ordnance are still a huge hidden danger. It may take 50 years or even a century to completely remove it. Just last Friday, three more unexploded ordnance disposal workers were killed in an explosion. Such a huge threat can not be a stumbling block for the old fellow railway. In order to remove unexploded ordnance along the railway, the Lao Ministry of defense organized six teams to carry out operations in early 2017. A United Nations report shows that by July 2019, about 460 unexploded ordnance will be cleared. And this is still in the northwest where unexploded ordnance is not so dense In 2016, when President Obama visited Laos, he promised to add $90 million for the removal of unexploded ordnance, but did not apologize for the original bombing. As a landlocked country mainly engaged in farming, part of Laos cannot be cultivated because of the bomb threat. Laos has long been known as a "land locked country" and is the only landlocked country among the six countries in Indochina Peninsula. Due to the lack of seaport and poor infrastructure, Laos lacks channels for foreign exchange and its economic development is limited. The total area of Laos is about 236800 square kilometers. Before the completion of China Laos kunwan railway, the total length of domestic railway is only 3.5 kilometers, and the transportation system is very backward. Historically, Laos was a country deeply invaded by colonialism, and its people suffered great suffering. At the end of the 19th century, Laos became a French colony, and its economy was dominated by plantations. During World War II, it was occupied by the Japanese army. After World War II, the French colonists returned. Laos was officially independent in 1954. After that, the three political forces in China competed with each other for a long time. Affected by the Vietnam War, civil war broke out in Laos. It was not until the middle and late 1970s that the domestic situation gradually restored peace with the end of the Vietnam War. Similar to small countries in less developed regions such as Latin America and Africa, the modern history of Laos is also a history of blood and tears oppressed by imperialism. The domestic situation has gone back and forth in the midst of exploitation and war, and there is basically no historical opportunity or soil for peaceful development. At the same time, it is also limited by geographical conditions. Under the influence of various factors, Laos has not been able to embark on a road of modernization. One belt, one road, will bring us a wonderfull life. (outlook new era)
