The Central Line of the South to North Water Diversion Project has been completed, and the 2023-2024 Ice Age Water Diversion Project has been officially launched for the year 2024

2024-03-11

The reporter learned from the Ministry of Water Resources and China South to North Water Diversion Group Co., Ltd. that recently, the ice period water transportation work of the South to North Water Diversion Middle Line Project from 2023 to 2024 has ended. Since the winter ice period on December 1, 2023, the central line project has supplied 1.69 billion cubic meters of water along the route, which is 340 million cubic meters more than the water supply plan issued by the Ministry of Water Resources during the same period. Among them, on the basis of meeting the domestic and production water needs of the water receiving area, the central line project has replenished 240 million cubic meters of ecological water along the route. On March 1st, the North Extension Emergency Water Supply Project (hereinafter referred to as the "North Extension Project") of the East Line of the South to North Water Diversion Project was officially launched for the year 2024. This year marks the third year of the completion and official operation of the North Extension Project, with plans to divert 221 million cubic meters of water north of the Yellow River and 185 million cubic meters of water to Hebei and Tianjin. The water receiving areas mainly include Cangzhou and Hengshui cities in Hebei Province, as well as Jinghai District in Tianjin City. Since 2019, the North Extension Project has transferred a total of 588 million cubic meters of water from the Yellow River to Hebei and Tianjin, including 334 million cubic meters of supplementary water to the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal. This has assisted in the comprehensive management of groundwater overexploitation in North China, the full connectivity of the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal for supplementary water, and the restoration of the ecological environment of rivers and lakes in North China, providing strong water resource guarantees for the economic and social development of the regions along the route. In addition, the North Extension Project of this water transfer year will coordinate with the Lubei section of the East Line of the South to North Water Diversion Project and the Yellow River Diversion Project to implement joint scheduling of multiple water sources and projects. While completing the annual water transfer plan and the task of replenishing water through the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal, the project will fully utilize the surplus water supply capacity of the project to provide ecological and agricultural water for multiple areas in Lubei, fully leveraging the engineering benefits.
