The focus of wetland protection in China will shift from increasing quantity to improving quality

2023-11-06

On the 5th, Guan Zhiou, Director of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, stated that in the future, the focus of wetland protection work in China should shift from increasing quantity and expanding scale to standardized management and improving quality, continuously improving the diversity, stability, and sustainability of wetland ecosystems. This was learned by the reporter at the National Wetland Protection and Management Symposium held in Wuhan on the 5th. It is understood that since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, especially the 14th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Wetlands, China has made significant progress in wetland protection. At present, the national wetland area is about 56.35 million hectares, with 82 internationally important wetlands (including 1 in Hong Kong), 58 nationally important wetlands, 903 national wetland parks, and 13 international wetland cities. The wetland protection system has been preliminarily established. Guan Zhiou believes that in order to build a modern harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, wetland work must adapt to the requirements of the situation, adjust work ideas and focus, improve supporting laws and regulations, enhance supervision and management capabilities, scientifically restore important wetlands, explore the path of wetland ecological value transformation, and enhance the ability to participate in leading wetland global governance. He said that in the next two years, the focus will be on promoting the rectification of issues reflected in the law enforcement inspection of the National People's Congress, promoting the establishment and operation of the International Mangrove Center, continuously strengthening important wetland protection and restoration work such as the prevention and control of Spartina alterniflora, improving the monitoring and supervision capacity of national wetland parks, standardizing the construction and management of international important wetlands and international wetland cities, and comprehensively creating a new situation of comprehensive protection of wetlands in China in accordance with the law.
