The "Red Vest" Helps Protect the Yangtze River

2023-08-07

In the early morning of August 5, wearing a red vest, Wang Tian, an electrician from the Jiayu County Power Supply Company in Xianning, Hubei, hurried to Jinshenglan Wharf in the Yangtze River section. Just as Xianning issued an orange high temperature warning, he had to go to the dock to check whether the shore power Charging station was normal. At around 8:10, the cargo ship Yinxiang 666 docked at the dock. The ship owner Wu Huiyou connected the shore power cable to the ship and was about to charge it. Wang Tian came over to help him open the "Changjiang e+" app on his phone, scan the code, and enter the ship number. The air conditioning on the ship immediately started running. To protect the ecology of the Yangtze River, the engine cannot run when the ship docks at the dock. If there is no shore power, the air conditioning on board cannot operate. On such a hot day, there is no place on board without air conditioning, "said Wu Huiyou. Wang Tian is a volunteer of the "Edian Red Vest" service team. Since taking over the operation and maintenance task of the Jiayu Yangtze River shore power equipment in April last year, the seven shore power piles at the Jin Shenglan and Gezhouba docks along the Jiayu Yangtze River have become a concern for Wang Tian. From the unit to the dock, it was a one-way journey of over 20 kilometers. In over a year, he couldn't remember how many trips he had made. He is often busy inspecting equipment and training dock staff. The dry season in winter is the most stressful time for him to work. Due to the shallow water level, the ship is further away from the shore power piles, and the inexperienced ship owner is not good at operating the fairlead, all of which require on-site assistance from Wang Tian. In the cold river breeze, his clothes often sweat and dry several times. The loading and unloading of cargo ships docked at the dock usually takes one or two days. If there are many types and quantities of goods to be loaded and unloaded, there will be ships docked for over a week. "In the past, diesel fuel was used to generate electricity. The black smoke was very choking, and the noise was high and the cost was high." Qu Jianzhong, an employee of Jiayu County Jiatong Logistics Co., Ltd., said, "With shore power piles, it is not only convenient, but also protects the environment of the Yangtze River." Because of frequent contact at work, Qu Jianzhong and Wang Tian became close friends, and they became members of the Xianning "shore power development alliance" at the same time. Among these members are members of Xianning Port and Waterway Administration Bureau, Jiayu County Transportation Comprehensive Law Enforcement Brigade and other units. In May of this year, Hubei Electric Power Company completed the compatibility transformation of 222 shore power piles at 87 operational freight terminals in 8 cities across the province, allowing various types of berthing freight ships to enjoy "barrier free" shore power services. From January to July this year, Hubei Province's shore power has served a total of 10857 ships, with a charging capacity of 5.5447 million kilowatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 1546%, equivalent to 1392 tons of alternative fuel oil and a reduction of 4103 tons of various gas emissions. As a frontline protector of the Yangtze River, Wang Tangwai is proud that behind these measures and data, there is also his contribution. (New News Agency)
