9:1 to 1:9 "Ten Thousand Farmers" Leading Ten Thousand Farmers - The Road to Transformation for a Leading Agricultural Enterprise

2023-07-12

In midsummer, Honghu Lake is vast and picturesque, with lotus leaves reaching up to the sky. At the Wannong Aquatic Products Factory in the southeast corner, baskets of crayfish carrying muddy water are poured onto the conveyor belt, washed twice by ultrasound and water bath, turning white cheeks and clean bellies, and then transported to the production workshop. During the peak period of crayfish launch, such scenes are happening every day. Honghu is located in the hinterland of Jianghan Plain, with 102 lakes of different sizes and more than one million mu of water surface. Since the 1980s and 1990s, Honghu has developed the aquaculture industry according to local conditions. The area of freshwater aquaculture and the total amount of freshwater products have been among the forefront of County-level city all year round. Honghu Wannong Aquatic Food Co., Ltd. emerged at the historic moment under this wave and rapidly grew into a national key leading enterprise in agricultural industrialization. Luo Hongyu, Vice Chairman of Wannong Aquatic Products, introduced that in 1998, the predecessor of Wannong Aquatic Products, Deyan Aquatic Products, vigorously developed its foreign trade business after obtaining the right to self operate foreign trade exports. "Before and after 2010, the annual average export volume of the company has grown to 50 million dollars. The catfish, crayfish and other products are popular in the United States and Europe. The ratio of domestic and overseas sales is 9 to 1, making the company a major foreign trade player in Honghu City." Like many private enterprises, Wannong has experienced twists and turns in its development. In the rapid development, enterprises once embarked on a blind and diversified expansion path. In October 2012, the ammonia leakage accident of Deyan Aquatic Products became a landmark event for the company's rise and fall. In 2018, the company introduced new capital and management teams, carried out a comprehensive restructuring, and refocused on the aquatic processing industry, which brought it back to life. The most recent turning point occurred in 2020. Affected by the COVID-19, foreign trade business suffered a cold winter. At one point, sales decreased by nearly 70% year-on-year, and we had to lay off employees and shut down some production lines to reduce operating costs. "Recalling the dangerous situation at that time, Luo Hongyu felt a lingering fear. Faced with difficulties again, Wannong has anchored its focus on the "new track" of domestic sales through market analysis, while increasing research and development of new products such as frozen shrimp and expanding domestic sales channels. The transformation has revitalized Wannong. Data shows that last year alone, when exports were less than 10 million dollars, domestic sales increased to 650 million yuan. Products were sold to more than 20 provinces in China, becoming deep partners of more than 10 leading fresh food and catering companies, and many Private label gradually became famous. The fact has proven that the domestic consumption capacity is not inferior to that of foreign countries. The proportion of domestic and foreign sales has now become 1-to-9, "Luo Hongyu sighed. In the exhibition hall on the first floor of Wannong Aquatic Products, dozens of products are dazzling. Among them, a China-Chic style package of "grilled catfish" is the most conspicuous. This is a new product that we specialize in supplying to top fresh food companies, breaking the traditional high fat production method. It is also equipped with seasonings and sauces, and can be consumed by self-service heating, with a flavor that is not inferior to that of professional restaurants. "Zhang Jiangbo, General Manager of Wannong Fisheries, said that prefabricated dishes have become a market trend and also the direction of the company's future efforts. Wannong, which has regained its vitality, is becoming a carrier for benefiting farmers. In the nearly 30000 square meter sterile production workshop newly built by Wannong Fisheries, steam is steaming and more than 1500 workers are busy. The daily processing capacity ranges from 200 tons to 300 tons, with a peak period of up to 450 tons, "said Luo Hongyu
