Shamian Ancient Tree - Witness of Time (45)

2024-05-11

In 1859, Shamian became the British and French Concession, and the Provincial Foreign Affairs Office was originally the British Consulate General of Shamian in Guangzhou, the concession. In the past, the British Consulate General in Shamian, Guangzhou was renovated with a courtyard layout. The main building was located to the north, with auxiliary buildings on the east and west sides. In the middle of the courtyard was a large lawn, and there was one fine leaved banyan tree on the east and west sides. The trunk was thick and the crown was like a giant umbrella. The tree shape was beautiful, symmetrical on both sides, and was revered as a "feng shui tree". Legend has it that one night, amidst wind and rain, half of the branches of the fine leaved banyan tree in the east were struck by lightning. During the renovation period, the situation was constant. First, there was a Chinese general strike from 1924 to 1925, and the main structure was not completed until 1927. Later, for some reason, the roof of the consul general's house almost collapsed, and a large number of long-term rework repairs were carried out.
