2024-04-28

Puxian Opera, formerly known as Xinghua Opera, originated from puppetry in the Tang Dynasty and matured in the Song Dynasty. It was popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties and has a history of over a thousand years. It is known as the "living fossil of Southern Opera in the Song and Yuan dynasties", and is one of the oldest existing forms of performance, the most diverse repertoire, and the most distinctive in performing arts in China. It was selected as one of the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage in 2006. Mr. Lao She, a famous playwright, once praised Puxian Opera as "cute and charming, passed down from generation to generation. There are eight hundred string songs and five thousand pieces of pearls and jade." Guo Hancheng, a leading figure in the field of traditional Chinese opera theory, also said, "The value of Puxian Opera is equivalent to the value of Chinese culture and drama. We must protect and rescue Puxian Opera, the only ancient genre that fully preserves the influence of Song, Yuan, and Southern Opera." In recent years, Putian City in Fujian Province has activated its advantages in intangible cultural heritage resources, taken three measures of creation, inheritance, and dissemination, making millennium old opera live in the present, reflecting the times, and reading a book of its own revitalization of intangible cultural heritage opera. Focusing on drama creation and singing the spirit of the times, the Putian Municipal Government organized professional troupes to excavate and organize traditional classic dramas, and re arranged 16 traditional dramas such as "Mulian Saves Mother", "Jade Hairpin", "Wang Kui and Guiying", "Zheng Wenbao", "Gao Jizu", and 23 traditional excerpts such as "Dog Slaying: Welcoming the Spring and Leading the Dog" and "Zhang Gualao: Gualao Seed the Melon". 71 traditional performance segments such as "Mulian · Knocking on the Hell Gate" and "Zheng Wenbao · Encouraging the Attack on the Book" were carefully selected and organized, especially rescuing the "Mulian Opera", which is known as the "Encyclopedia of Puxian Opera Performance Art" - "Mulian Opera" And it was filmed and produced into video materials for permanent preservation. It also organized participation in various levels of exhibitions and performances, attracting widespread attention from the national theater industry. While rehearsing classic plays, they also created 12 high-quality plays, including "Stepping on an Umbrella", "Sea God Mazu", "Ye Liniang", "Jiang Meifei", "Imperial Censor Jiang Chunlin", and "Chen Wenlong". They also toured domestic cities such as Beijing, Nanjing, and Tianjin, as well as overseas countries such as Singapore and Malaysia, greatly enhancing the social awareness and international influence of Puxian Opera. For example, "Stepping on an Umbrella" not only won the 17th China "Wenhua Award", but its excerpts also appeared in the 2022 CCTV New Year's Opera Gala and the 2023 CCTV Spring Festival Gala, allowing audiences across the country and even the world to appreciate the unique cultural charm of Puxian Opera. In order to meet the aesthetic needs of contemporary audiences, a group of modern civilized small dramas such as "Crossing the River", "The Story of Earth Screening", "Quitting Gambling", and "Mother and Son Tears" have also emerged. These small plays reflect the content of contemporary social life, such as civilization construction, anti-corruption education, family traditions and teachings. They not only maintain the traditional charm of Puxian Opera, but also cleverly integrate modern elements, conveying positive and upward social values. This move has been affirmed by the Central Civilization Office, which believes that this approach is "credible, learnable, reliable, and usable, and is a very beneficial exploration model for innovating and inheriting traditional culture.". Focusing on talent cultivation and doing a good job in non genetic assistance, as a millennium old intangible cultural heritage genre, the talent of Puxian Opera is of utmost importance for its sustainable inheritance. Putian City has issued the "Regulations on the Protection and Inheritance of Puxian Opera", encouraging representative inheritors and artistic masters of Puxian Opera to establish Puxian Opera study centers, studios, etc., and carry out apprenticeship and art teaching activities
