As the only candidate, von der Leyen won 400 of the 489 votes, was elected with 81.79% of the votes, and was nominated as the leading candidate of the European People's Party, thus paving the way for his re-election as President of the European Commission. The Christian Democratic Union is a member party of the European People's Party, which is the most influential center right party group in European politics. The selection of the President of the European Commission is jointly decided by the Council of the European Union and the heads of government of member states. As a convention, the candidate for the leadership of the party with the highest vote share in the European Parliament elections will be nominated for the presidency of the European Commission.
