The European People's Party elects von der Leyen to run for re-election as President of the European Commission

On the 7th, the European People's Party decided to nominate Ursula Vondrein, the current president of the European Commission, as the leading candidate to represent the party in the European Parliament elections in June. The European People's Party held an election for its chairman in the Romanian capital Bucharest on that day. As the only candidate, von der Leyen won 400 of the 489 votes, was elected with 81.79% of the votes, and was nominated as the leading candidate of the European People's Party, thus paving the way for his re-election as President of the European Commission. Von der Leyen said on the 7th that it is a "lifelong honor" to serve the EU. She promises to be committed to peace, prosperity, and security in Europe, enhance its economic competitiveness, uphold the rule of law, and combat irregular immigration. On March 7, in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, the President of the European Commission Ursula Vondrein paid tribute to the people. The European People's Party Congress was held in Bucharest from the 6th to the 7th, with over 2000 representatives attending. In addition to electing the party chairman, the conference also discussed topics such as economy and employment, security and national defense, as well as intergenerational solidarity and fairness. Von der Leyen is 65 years old and has served as the President of the European Commission since December 2019. On February 19 this year, the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the political party of von der Leyen, officially supported her to run for re-election as the president of the European Commission. The Christian Democratic Union is a member party of the European People's Party, which is the most influential center right party group in European politics. The selection of the President of the European Commission is jointly decided by the Council of the European Union and the heads of government of member states. As a convention, the candidate for the leadership of the party with the highest vote share in the European Parliament elections will be nominated for the presidency of the European Commission.
