Recently, a live event with the theme of "When Technology Meets the Beauty of Traditional Chinese Opera" attracted over 7 million viewers online. The biggest highlight of this live broadcast is that, with the help of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and 6DoF, nearly 50 classic plays are presented to the audience in a brand new appearance, allowing viewers to experience the "singing, reciting, and playing" of traditional Chinese opera from zero distance. This live broadcast event, initiated by the Art Development Center of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Tencent, opened the prelude to the "Digital Revitalization Action of Chinese Opera Culture", showcasing the enormous potential of digital technology to empower the inheritance and dissemination of opera. The research team of Beijing Institute of Technology has created the "Mei Lanfang Twin Digital Human" using digital technologies such as artificial intelligence. Data pictures Artificial intelligence restored the traditional opera images, reproduced the charm of the old artists, and the live broadcast presented a high-definition video collection of nearly 50 classic opera works, including the classic works such as "Happy Tianjin", "Jiujiangkou", "Ancient City Meeting", "Heavenly Immortals Match", involving Beijing Opera, Kunqu Opera, Shaoxing Opera, Sichuan Opera, Henan Opera, Pingju Opera, Cantonese Opera, Huangmei Opera, Huai Opera, Qin Opera Opera and other different operas. The images of these opera works were mostly shot in the 1940s and 1950s. Due to prolonged storage time, many works have various problems such as incompleteness, shaking, scratches, flickering, noise, blurring, etc. Some films and tapes even break at a touch. To reproduce the theatrical images on the film, it is necessary to repair the film. The use of artificial intelligence technology can greatly improve repair efficiency. A repairman explained that the manual repair process is complicated and tedious, and an experienced repairman needs several months to complete a traditional Chinese opera film. Artificial intelligence has deep learning capabilities. With the increase of "repair experience", it can quickly find the optimal repair solution from "repair memory" when facing various problems in images. Artificial intelligence repair technology not only fills gaps, but also focuses on the details and texture of images, making them more delicate and vivid. For example, the traditional Chinese opera film "Tian Xian Pai" was shot in the 1950s, and now not only is the picture blurry, but some characters' faces are also obscured by noise. In the restoration process, artificial intelligence technology is utilized to not only reproduce the contours of the human face, but also generate details of the facial features through simulation technology. Even every strand of hair and eyelashes can be perfectly presented. "Many people today have not seen famous opera characters such as Mei Lanfang. Through the restored high-definition opera works, we can not only see the true appearance of these characters, but more importantly, appreciate their authentic performance skills." said Lin Yujia, an actor at Kunshan Contemporary Kunqu Opera Theater. The nearly 50 plays broadcasted in this live broadcast are the first batch of works repaired by the "Digital Revitalization Action of Chinese Opera Culture" using artificial intelligence repair technology. "Our philosophy is to restore the old as it is, not only to enhance clarity, but also to maximize the restoration of the vintage feel of the restored work, such as color tone, sound quality, etc., while preserving the characteristics of the past era as much as possible," said Xu Xiaozhong, the head of the expanded media center at Tencent Multimedia Laboratory, who participated in the restoration work. The use of artificial intelligence technology to restore traditional Chinese opera images is regarded by industry experts as an innovation in the inheritance of traditional Chinese opera culture
