National People's Congress representative Hang Kan: Intensify talent cultivation and fully protect cultural heritage

2024-02-28

On the eve of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, National People's Congress representative and President of the Yungang Research Institute, Hang Kan, continued to conduct research and visits at the Yungang Grottoes, making final revisions to the suggestions. The Yungang Grottoes are located in Datong, Shanxi, with a history of over 1500 years. It is a cultural and artistic treasure trove that integrates Chinese and foreign cultures, ethnic minority cultures, Central Plains culture, Buddhist art, and stone carving art. In Hang Kan's view, cultural heritage is a precious and non renewable resource, and it is very important to do a good job in protection. He said that the Yungang Grottoes are mainly for preventive protection and require more technological investment. In 2023, Hang Kan was elected as a delegate to the 14th National People's Congress. In the past year of fulfilling his duties, Hang Kan has actively promoted the construction of the Yungang Studies discipline and talent cultivation, hoping to explore the historical connotations of various ethnic exchanges and integration contained in the Yungang Grottoes through Yungang Studies research, and enhance the sense of community of the Chinese nation. The opening of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference is approaching, and Hang Kan is focusing on the construction of cultural heritage courses and talent cultivation. He believes that protecting and utilizing a cultural heritage requires not only archaeology, but also interdisciplinary knowledge and research in museums, ancient architecture, art, and other fields. Many universities have a long way to go in the construction of cultural heritage courses. He suggested that measures should be taken to provide more talent and academic support for the protection, transformation, and utilization of Chinese cultural heritage. (Lai Xin She)
