EU launches Red Sea Escort Operation

2024-02-20

The European Council announced on the 19th the launch of escort operations in the Red Sea and Gulf regions to safeguard their commercial and security interests. The European Council stated in a press release on the same day that the goal of the escort operation is to "restore and maintain freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and Gulf.". It is reported that this operation called "Shield" will ensure the presence of the European Union Navy in the region, committed to maintaining maritime safety and ensuring the freedom of navigation, especially for merchant ships. The European Union stated that the operation will take place on the main maritime routes of the Strait of Mandate and the Strait of Hormuz, as well as international waters in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and Persian Gulf. The operation command center will be located in the Greek city of Larissa. It is reported that since the outbreak of a new round of conflict between Palestine and Israel in October last year, Yemeni Houthi militants have repeatedly attacked ships in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, and Gulf of Oman. European Union Commissioner Paul Gentiloni, who is in charge of economic affairs, recently stated that due to a change in route through the Red Sea, shipping time between Asia and the European Union has increased by 10 to 15 days, and transportation costs have increased by approximately 400%.
