This is the evaluation of Hong Zicheng's "History of Contemporary Chinese Literature" by Japanese scholar Yuki Kato. As an academic classic, this book has had a wide impact both domestically and internationally since its publication. Recently, "A History of Contemporary Chinese Literature" was reprinted in hardcover form by Peking University Press. The History of Contemporary Chinese Literature is a representative work of Professor Hong Zicheng from the Chinese Department of Peking University, outlining the occurrence and development process of contemporary Chinese literature from 1949 to 2000. The book covers literary stages, overall characteristics of literary creation in different periods, and literary systems. Representative works and key writers in genres such as novels, poetry, prose, and drama are selected for evaluation. This literary history has pioneering value in terms of historical views and research methods, and is recognized as having foundational significance for the construction of contemporary Chinese literature discipline. The History of Contemporary Chinese Literature was first published in August 1999 and a revised version was published in June 2007. Up to now, it has been published in seven foreign languages, including English, Japanese, and Russian, and has been highly praised by academic circles both domestically and internationally. In addition to the approved literature of the entire book, the hardcover version of this publication has added three additional appendices, namely "List of Domestic and Foreign Editions of the History of Contemporary Chinese Literature", "Selected Comments from Domestic and Foreign Languages", and "Index of Main Commentary Items", aiming to clearly present the dissemination and reception of the book at home and abroad, and better help readers enter relevant academic topics.
