Hong Kong fireworks dance to welcome the New Year

2024-01-02

At midnight on the 1st, brilliant fireworks swept across the night sky of Xiangjiang, and between light and shadow, water and fire, Hong Kong ushered in a brand new year of 2024. Thousands of people enjoy fireworks and welcome the new year with brilliance. On the afternoon of December 31st, a large number of citizens and tourists gathered on both sides of Victoria Harbour to watch the fireworks display. At 11 pm on the same day, three buildings on Hong Kong Island - the Harbour Center, the Harcourt Building, and the Yangtze River Center - released four colored "wishing meteors" from the rooftops every 15 minutes, symbolizing sweetness, happiness, wealth, and health. At 11:30, young singers and dancers performed brilliantly on the Victoria Harbour observation deck, pushing the atmosphere to a climax. At 00:60 on the 1st, a giant countdown clock appeared on the glass curtain wall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center located in Wan Chai. "Five, four, three, two, one, happy new year!" With the arrival of the New Year's Eve, the screen displayed the words "2024", and everyone cheered, hugged, and wished each other well. Subsequently, the 12 minute "New Year's Legend" themed fireworks display kicked off in 2024. Five barges and 16 floating boats brought colorful fireworks that bloomed brilliantly in the night sky, blending electronic music, Western classical music, and Chinese musical instruments, bringing a colorful and highly layered audio-visual feast to the citizens. Under the darkness, the tall buildings near Victoria Harbour transform into a giant light and shadow painting, showcasing Hong Kong's unique charm to the world. In the final scene of the fireworks display, "Writing a New Legend", patterns such as "love" and "smiling face" gradually bloomed, illuminating the sky, symbolizing new hope for the New Year, and wishing Hong Kong another brilliant future. The designer of this New Year's Eve fireworks event, Liu Lin, stated that the overall fireworks plan took three months from design to implementation. "The entire fireworks display is set against the urban skyline, showcasing China's spring life, summer growth, autumn harvest, and winter collection through different colors and shapes of fireworks, accompanied by music that blends Eastern and Western elements, showcasing the charm of Hong Kong's integration of Chinese and Western cultures.". This year's New Year's fireworks display is the largest in history, with fireworks set off spanning from Central to North Point, with a total length of 1300 meters. To reduce the impact of weather on the fireworks effect, the design team has conducted extensive research and preparation on the wind direction of Victoria Harbour, striving to bring extraordinary audio-visual enjoyment to the public. According to data from mainland tourism platforms, Hong Kong is the top popular overseas destination for this year's New Year holiday. In the first New Year holiday after the comprehensive restoration of Hong Kong society, the fireworks display has brought warmth and harmony to the Hong Kong consumer market. Businesses have launched measures such as "fireworks meals" and "fireworks landscape houses" or extended business hours to help the economy heat up. Chen Juewei, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Hotel Industry Association, stated that the hotel occupancy rate in Hong Kong reached about 90% on December 31, and the room rate has returned to about 80% of 2018. On December 29th, the Hong Kong police predicted at a press conference that the fireworks display would attract approximately 420000 people to watch. "I hope that in the new year, every effort will yield a harvest. May Hong Kong prosper and stabilize, and the 'Pearl of the East' become even more brilliant," said Ms. Tan, a Hong Kong citizen.
