Jiangxi Commemorates the 300th Anniversary of the Establishment of Gutang Customs

The series of activities celebrating the 300th anniversary of the establishment of the "First Pass of Wanli Tea Road (Gutang Customs)" were recently held in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province. Gutang Customs was established in 1723 as the only trade port and commodity distribution center for Poyang Lake entering the Yangtze River. The former site of the customs is backed by Guanshan Mountain and faces Poyang Lake to the east. It includes a combination of Chinese and Western buildings such as the tax collection office, office, and dormitory building. It is the only modern customs in Jiangxi Province that has been well preserved and an important heritage site on the "Ten Thousand Li Tea Road" between China, Mongolia, and Russia. It has high historical and architectural value and is a national key cultural relic protection unit. Yu Yue, Chief Researcher of the Jiangxi Academy of Social Sciences, introduced that Gutang Customs was once a necessary route for the distribution of Fujian tea, Gan tea, and Huizhou tea. It is a historical witness carrying the heritage value of the ten thousand mile tea ceremony and is known as the "first pass of the ten thousand mile tea ceremony". Zhao Heping, Secretary of the Lianxi District Committee of Jiujiang City, stated that the former site of Gutang Customs, as an important witness to the "Ten Thousand Li Tea Ceremony", is a key cultural and tourism scenic area under protection and construction in Lianxi District. Next, the local government will further explore and tell the story of Gutang Customs, cultivate and promote the tea industry. It is reported that as an important node city of the Wanli tea ceremony and one of the "three major tea markets" in Chinese history, Jiujiang City has actively practiced the concept of coordinated development of the "three teas" in recent years, creating tea brands, expanding the tea market, integrating tea culture and tourism, and accelerating the high-quality development of the tea industry.
