China and South Korea test run multimodal vehicle transportation in Weihai Incheon

2023-12-20

At around 15:40 on the 19th, a truck loaded with Chinese e-commerce export goods boarded the "Xinjinqiao 7" Sino Korean passenger and freight liner at the Weihai Port Passenger Terminal, marking the beginning of the trial operation of China South Korea multimodal transportation (Weihai Incheon). The reporter learned from the Ministry of Transport that the "Xinjinqiao 7" Sino Korean passenger and freight liner will arrive at Incheon Port, South Korea at noon on the 20th. At that time, the truck will travel along the established route to Incheon Airport for unloading, and the goods will be transported to many parts of the world by international flights on the same day. On February 24th this year, the transportation and customs departments of China and South Korea jointly signed a memorandum of understanding on the trial operation of China South Korea multimodal transportation (Weihai Incheon), agreeing to carry out multimodal transportation cooperation based on whole vehicle transportation between Weihai Incheon. Compared with the current "sea+air" transportation mode, the trial operation of multimodal transportation can increase speed by nearly 5 hours and reduce logistics costs by about 30% through full vehicle transportation without changing or rolling on/off the ship. Xuan Dengdian, Deputy Director of the Transport Service Department of the Ministry of Transport, stated that the transportation authorities of the two countries will take this trial operation as an opportunity to further strengthen communication and exchange, strengthen cross-border transportation cooperation, and jointly build a safer, risk resistant, and sustainable land sea intermodal transportation and logistics system between the two countries under the framework of the China South Korea Joint Committee on Land Sea Intermodal Transport of Automobile Goods and other bilateral and multilateral cooperation mechanisms, in order to better serve economic and trade exchanges between the two countries. Zhang Yuhong, Deputy Director of the Department of Transportation of Shandong Province, stated that through China South Korea multimodal transportation, cross-border e-commerce goods from Shandong and across the country can reach the world more quickly, and Shandong's position in the Northeast Asian logistics network is expected to be further enhanced. In 1990, the first "Jinqiao" passenger and freight liner operated between Weihai and Incheon, establishing the first passenger and freight liner route between China and South Korea. In 2015, the Weihai and Incheon Free Economic Zones were selected by the governments of China and South Korea as demonstration zones for local economic cooperation in the China South Korea Free Trade Zone.
