The new Polish government is sworn in

2023-11-28

The new Polish government, led by Prime Minister Moravitsky, was sworn in at the Presidential Palace on the 27th, and will undergo a parliamentary vote of confidence within 14 days. According to the news agency, Moravitsky submitted a list of new government members to President Duda that afternoon, including some former cabinet members and some new faces, including Shimon Shenkovsky Welsenk as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Malena Malonge as Minister of Development and Technology, and Marius Boushchak remaining Minister of Defense. In the new government, more than half of the members are women. The new government of Morawitzki must accept a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives within 14 days. If the vote of confidence is not passed, the House of Representatives will elect a new Prime Minister to form a cabinet. This analysis points out that Moravitsky and his government from the Law and Justice Party are unlikely to gain a majority of support in the House of Representatives. The Civic Alliance, the Third Way Alliance, and the New Left Party, which have won a total of 248 seats in the House of Representatives, are likely to form an alliance to take office. Former Prime Minister Tusk, who previously served as President of the European Council, is expected to become Prime Minister. The Polish House of Representatives has a total of 460 seats and the Senate has 100 seats. In the Polish parliamentary elections held on October 15th, the Law and Justice Party continued to maintain its position as the largest party in the House of Representatives, but only won 194 seats in the House, failing to exceed half of the seats and losing its independent governing qualification. In early November, Duda announced that according to parliamentary tradition, the political party that won parliamentary elections would first have the opportunity to form a cabinet, and he decided to hand over the task of forming a cabinet to Moravitsky.
