OPEC Upgrades Global Oil Demand Forecast

2023-10-10

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) released its "2023 World Oil Outlook Report" on the 9th, raising its global oil demand forecast. It is expected that the average daily demand for global oil in 2045 will be 116 million barrels, an increase of 16.4% from the average daily demand of 996 million barrels in 2022. OPEC Secretary General Hesse Gates stated in the preface of the report that the organization's latest forecast for global average daily oil demand in 2045 is an increase of approximately 6 million barrels compared to the 2022 World Oil Outlook report, and this number is likely to be further increased. OPEC stated in its report that the growth in global oil demand will mainly come from emerging economies and developing regions, and its forecast is based on expectations for sustained global population and economic growth over the next 20 years. OPEC also predicts in its report that in the next 20 years, oil will still be the largest proportion of the global energy structure, but the proportion will decrease from 31.2% in 2022 to 29.5% in 2045. The proportion of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy will increase from 2.7% in 2022 to 11.7% in 2045. Gais stated that in order to meet the continuously growing global oil demand, the oil industry will require approximately $14 trillion in investment by 2045. However, there are also international energy agencies who hold different views on the prospects of global oil demand. The 2023 mid-term oil market report released by the International Energy Agency in June this year believes that with the acceleration of the transition to clean energy, the growth rate of global oil demand will significantly slow down in the coming years. The Director of the International Energy Agency, Birol, stated at the time that with the development of electric vehicles, improved energy efficiency, and other technological advancements, global oil demand is expected to peak before the end of this decade.
