Opening of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Summit: Political Declaration on Accelerating the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals

2023-09-19

The two-day United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Summit opened at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the 18th, and adopted a political declaration aimed at accelerating the achievement of sustainable development goals. The declaration promises to provide funding for developing countries, explicitly supports the sustainable development goal stimulus plan proposed by UN Secretary General Guterres with an annual budget of at least $500 billion, as well as effective debt relief mechanisms. The declaration also calls for a change in the business model of multilateral development banks, providing private funding to developing countries at more affordable interest rates, and supporting the reform of the international financial architecture that Guterres referred to as "outdated, dysfunctional, and unfair". Guterres said at the opening ceremony of the summit that achieving sustainable development goals requires action in six key areas, including addressing hunger, increasing investment in renewable energy transformation, and promoting internet access for all. He also elaborated on the response measures of the United Nations in different fields, including reforming the global food system to ensure that everyone has access to a healthy diet. Francis, the President of the 78th United Nations General Assembly, pointed out that despite the commitments made by the international community, as of 2022, 1.2 billion people still live in multidimensional poverty. By 2030, approximately 8% of the global population (approximately 680 million people) will still face hunger, and the international community cannot accept these numbers. He emphasized that through "coordinated and ambitious actions", the international community still has the potential to lift 124 million people out of poverty by 2030. The President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, Paula Navae, stated that the declaration adopted on that day is proof of the firm commitment of countries to achieving sustainable development goals. In September 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda with 17 Sustainable Development Goals as its core, committed to eradicating poverty, promoting equality, and addressing climate change by 2030. Guterres said at the summit that only 15% of the goals are currently on track, and many of them have even been reversed. However, the political declaration adopted this time "can promote change and accelerate progress towards sustainable development goals". (New News Agency)
