Chinese and foreign experts jointly discuss "Pan Third Pole Plant Diversity Protection"

2023-09-01

To promote the conservation of plant diversity in the Pan Third Polar Region and discuss future collaborative research directions, the first "International Frontier Academic Seminar on Plant Diversity Conservation in the Pan Third Polar Region" was successfully held in Kunming from August 28th to 31st. The conference attracted nearly 200 representatives from home and abroad, and well-known experts and scholars from the United States, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Türkiye, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Nepal, South Korea and other countries exchanged and shared reports in this field. The pan third polar region refers to the Qinghai Tibet Plateau as the core, covering East Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, and Central and Eastern Europe, with an area of approximately 20 million square kilometers, including over 3 billion people from over 20 countries and regions. The pan third polar region has the highest altitude and largest plateau in the world, as well as densely populated global biodiversity hotspots, which are strongly affected by global climate change. The purpose of this meeting is to delve into cutting-edge scientific research on the conservation of plant diversity in the Pan Tertiary Region at a regional or even global scale, understand the issues of plant diversity conservation in the Pan Tertiary Region, reveal the laws of plants responding to environmental changes in the Pan Tertiary Region, and explore green development strategies for future exploration and sustainable utilization of plant resources in the Pan Tertiary Region. The seminar was hosted by the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and co organized by the Second Comprehensive Scientific Expedition and Research on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau - the topic of plant diversity conservation and sustainable use, the Yunnan Botanical Society, the Editorial Department of Plant Diversity, and the Yunnan Central Asia Biodiversity International Joint Laboratory.
