Türkiye climatologists predict that the global temperature will hit a new high next year

2023-08-30

Türkiye climatologist said on the 29th that, affected by climate change and El Ni ñ o phenomenon, it is expected that the global temperature next year will break the record of this year's highest temperature and reach a new high. Levint Kurnaz, a famous climatologist and director of the Center for Climate Change and Policy Research at Boaziji University in Türkiye, said in an interview with local media that the temperature next year is expected to be much higher than this year. He reminded everyone to pay attention to the record breaking days of high temperatures worldwide this year. Kurnaz emphasized that current global warming can be largely attributed to climate change. In the past three years, the water temperature in the Pacific has been below average, which to some extent masks the consequences of global warming. He said that the El Ni ñ o phenomenon officially began to appear in May this year. In Türkiye, the impact of El Ni ñ o has begun to emerge in the past 20 days and will peak in the following months. Generally speaking, the end of July and the first week of August in Türkiye are the peak of summer heat, and then the temperature begins to decline. However, since the middle and late August of this year, Türkiye has experienced abnormal climate, and the temperature has increased significantly compared with previous years. At present, Türkiye has been affected by El Nino. It is expected that the temperature in Türkiye in September this year will be significantly higher than that in previous years. Kurnaz said that one of the benefits of El Nino is that it will bring rain to Türkiye. We hope we won't experience the dry and rainy weather like last year. El Ni ñ o is a naturally occurring climate pattern that typically occurs every 2 to 7 years and lasts for 9 to 12 months. It is related to the increase in ocean surface temperature in the central and eastern parts of the tropical Pacific, affecting ocean currents and airflow in the surrounding areas of the Pacific, thereby bringing changes to weather in various regions. Generally, areas with low rainfall may experience floods, while some areas with high rainfall may experience droughts. (New News Agency)
