Beidou+5G, Deng Zhongliang Makes China Leading the World in Positioning and Navigation

2023-08-22

Our goal is to achieve full time domain, full spatial domain, high-precision, and highly robust positioning and navigation. The person who said this is Deng Zhongliang, a professor and doctoral supervisor at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. As a top scientist in the industry, Deng Zhongliang has multiple identities, such as an academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, director of the National Engineering and Technology Research Center for Disaster Recovery Technology, and head of the National 863 Project, which also proves Professor Deng's significant position in the academic field. Professor Deng Zhongliang from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, many people may be curious, where are the application points of positioning and navigation technology? What are the application scenarios of this technology besides daily travel positioning? What changes will the leading positioning and navigation technology bring to national development and public life in the future? With these questions in mind, we interviewed Professor Deng Zhongliang and also opened the door to a new world in the field of positioning and navigation. From "Skynet" to "Earth Net", the field of positioning and navigation faces new challenges. In today's society, mobile phones have become the most dependent digital devices, and using navigation for travel is also a habit of many people today. But if you pay a little attention, you will find that whether it is Gaode or Baidu, there will be a prompt of "Beidou Satellite Navigation for You", which is also the most direct manifestation of the commercial application of Beidou Satellite Navigation. In fact, since China launched global services on July 31, 2020, Beidou satellite navigation has been widely used in various fields such as aviation, navigation, communication, electricity, transportation, surveying and mapping, and now covers more than 200 countries and regions worldwide, becoming one of the four major global satellite navigation systems recognized by the United Nations. But satellite navigation applications are not omnipotent either. Many people have a similar experience - when we are indoors, such as in an office or shopping mall, there will be significant errors in satellite navigation positioning, and mobile phones will also prompt "weak satellite signal". At this time, the positioning system needs a new indoor positioning method. As Professor Deng Zhongliang mentioned in an interview, "The environment in shaded and semi shaded spaces is very complex, and satellite signals are often unreachable and may be blocked or interfered with, which creates a contradiction with our needs. The problem we face is how to solve this contradiction. In order to solve this problem, the industry has conducted many studies and proposed various indoor positioning technology types, including image, wireless, geomagnetic, inertial navigation, etc. Among them, wireless positioning technology alone includes various types such as Wi Fi, BLE, UWB, ZigBee, RFID, etc. It can be said that there are five flowers, eight gates, and a myriad of ideas. In the face of these choices, Professor Deng Zhongliang, after years of research and exploration, proposed a celestial integrated positioning architecture. Through a series of new technologies such as Beidou+mobile communication network and multi-source fusion positioning, he broke through the problem of heterogeneous system fusion positioning, achieved cross physical layer signal fusion, and further improved the accuracy of celestial integrated positioning. 5G is a 'network on the ground', while Beidou is a 'network in the sky'. 5G solves the problem of complex spatial signal coverage on the ground, Beidou solves the problem of time benchmark, and the fusion and mutual empowerment of Beidou+5G bring a massive amount of high-precision and timely geographic big data. When discussing technical advantages, Deng Zhongliang
