Argentina's central bank announced a 2100 basis point interest rate hike

2023-08-15

The Central Bank of Argentina announced a 2100 basis point interest rate hike on the 14th, raising the benchmark interest rate from 97% to 118%. This is the fifth rate hike by the Argentine central bank this year. The central bank of China issued a statement on the same day stating that the interest rate hike is mainly aimed at anchoring exchange rate expectations, improving local currency investment returns, and stabilizing foreign exchange reserves. The market expectation survey report released by the Central Bank of China in July predicts that the country's inflation rate will reach 142.4% in 2023. Faced with the complex inflation situation, the Argentine central bank raised interest rates once in March, twice in April, and once in May this year, raising the benchmark interest rate from 75% at the beginning of the year to 97%.
