2023-08-01

On July 31, the Pakistani government held a grand celebration in Islamabad, the capital, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the launch of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor. As an important pilot project for the joint construction of the "the Belt and Road", the construction of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor has achieved fruitful results over the past decade, becoming a "new benchmark" for China Pakistan friendship. Various sectors in Pakistan believe that the corridor not only creates multiple development dividends, but also truly practices the global governance concept of joint consultation, construction, and sharing. In 2008, an article on the Pakistani internet titled "Pakistan Faces More Crises: Electricity, Flour, Sugar, Water, and Natural Gas Crisis - Where is the Way Out?" sparked widespread discussion. The article described: "In the past two weeks, in many areas of the old city of Lahore, the capital of the eastern Punjab province, there was often no electricity, gas or water for a whole day... The news said that in the vast rural areas, only two to four hours of electricity was provided every day." Zemir Awan, the founding chairman of the Global Silk Road Research Alliance, a Pakistani think-tank, said that at that time, faced with the coercion and pressure of some Western countries, Pakistan faced difficulties in its development, "It is the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor that revitalizes Pakistan". The construction of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor was started in 2013. In 2015, the governments of China and Pakistan signed more than 50 cooperation agreements, and determined the "1+4" cooperation layout with the construction of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor as the center and the Gwadar Port, energy, infrastructure construction, and industrial cooperation as the four major priorities. In just a few years since then, a number of projects have been started, completed and put into operation to strengthen Pakistan's strength and strength: with the completion of Sahiwal, Port Qasim and Khub Coal fired Power Station at the "Chinese speed" for commercial operation, the power shortage situation in Pakistan has been greatly improved since 2017; Karot Hydropower Station, HydroChina Dawood Wind Power Project, Bahawalpur PV Power Station and other renewable energy projects have enriched Pakistan's energy structure; The integration project of coal and electricity in Block 1 and Block 2 of the Thar Coalfield has been put into commercial operation to assist Pakistan Energy in fuel self-sufficiency. Aksan Iqbal, Minister of Planning, Development and Special Projects of Pakistan, said that the energy and power project of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor has greatly helped Pakistan solve the serious power shortage problem it faced before. In the past ten years, the corridor has also completed the "China Pakistan Friendship Road" Karakoram Highway Phase II Upgrading Project, Lahore Orange Line Rail Transit Project, and Peshawar Karachi Expressway. Prime Minister of Pakistan Prime Minister Shabaz once said that Pakistan has benefited a lot from the cooperation in the corridor. The corridor construction has greatly improved the accessibility of roads throughout Pakistan. "The driving distance from Lahore to Karachi has been reduced from more than 20 hours to less than 12 hours, which is a huge change". Significant progress has been made in the construction of Gwadar Port. Yu Bo, chairman of China Overseas Port Holding Co., Ltd., which is responsible for operating Gwadar Port, told reporters that at present, Gwadar Port has built a multi-purpose terminal with three 50000 ton berths, and the port has full operational capacity. The first phase of the Gwadar Port Free Zone has been completed, with 35 enterprises settling in and an investment of more than 3 billion yuan. There have also been new breakthroughs in the field of industrial cooperation. The first phase of the Lashakai Special Economic Zone project has been officially completed, attracting investment
