Recently, it was learned from the Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology that archaeologists have discovered for the first time a relatively concentrated handicraft workshop site in the mid Tang Dynasty in the ancient city site of Jinyang, Shanxi. It is reported that this discovery provides important materials for studying the technological history of smelting and manufacturing metals in the Tang Dynasty; The second is of great significance for exploring the urban layout and evolution of the ancient city of Jinyang. The site of Jinyang Ancient City is located in Jinyuan Town, southwest of Taiyuan City, with an area of about 20 square kilometers. It is a large city site from the Spring and Autumn Period to the Tang and Five Dynasties, and mainly consists of three parts: city site, religious sacrifice site, and tomb site. Jinyang Ancient City Site is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level, and also the first batch of 23 National archaeological park of China construction projects announced by the National Cutural Heritage Administration. Since the 1990s, archaeologists have gradually begun large-scale archaeological excavations of this site. A large number of ruins have been discovered, including city walls, city gates, large buildings, and porcelain kilns. The newly discovered handicraft workshop site is located within the scope of the second building site in Jinyang Ancient City, and belongs to the lower cultural layer of the second building site. According to the project leader Han Binghua, archaeologists have successively cleared 1 house site, 3 sections of water channels, 1 water reservoir, 34 stove sites, 63 ash pits, and 642 coal (ash) slag pits within the workshop site. A large number of relics such as pottery, porcelain, bones, copper, and iron were unearthed. The coins unearthed include Kaiyuan Tongbao, Qianyuan Chongbao, Wuzhu, Changping Wuzhu. Han Binghua said that based on the blast ducts, ash pits, coal slag pits, as well as the copper and iron residues found in crucibles and ash pits within the site, it is speculated that this is a workshop site for smelting and processing copper and iron in the Tang Dynasty. Han Binghua said that the unearthed artifacts from the workshop site are rich and have obvious cultural characteristics of the Tang Dynasty. The unearthed iron armor pieces are similar in shape to the Tang Dynasty iron armor unearthed in Qujiangchi, Xi'an; The open necked jar is similar to the gray pottery jar unearthed from the Tang tomb in Jinsheng Village, Taiyuan; The copper belt buckle is consistent with the style of the copper belt tools unearthed from the Tang Dynasty Yao Wupi Tomb in Xi'an. It is preliminarily inferred that the age of the workshop site is around the mid Tang Dynasty. (New News Agency)
