UNCTAD Report: Global Foreign Direct Investment Decreased by 12% in 2022

2023-07-07

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) released a report on the 5th, saying that due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, high food and energy prices, soaring public debt and other factors, global foreign direct investment in 2022 will decline by 12% to 1.3 trillion US dollars from the previous year. The World Investment Report 2023 released by UNCTAD on the same day showed that foreign direct investment inflows to developed economies decreased by 37% to $378 billion in 2022, while foreign direct investment inflows to developing countries increased by 4% to $916 billion. From an industry perspective, the number of investment projects in industries facing supply chain challenges such as electronics, semiconductors, automobiles, and machinery has surged, while investment in the digital economy has slowed down. The report said that developing countries are working hard to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, and their annual investment deficit is expanding. The investment gap has expanded from 2.5 trillion dollars in 2015 to about 4 trillion dollars a year now. The report shows that the growth of renewable energy investment slowed down in 2022, with international investment in renewable energy generation, including solar and wind energy, increasing by 8%, lower than the 50% growth rate in 2021. Meanwhile, the announced battery manufacturing projects in 2022 have doubled, with an investment of over $100 billion. The report also states that developing countries will attract approximately $544 billion in investment in the renewable energy sector in 2022, but it is far from the $1.7 trillion required annually. The report calls for urgent support to developing countries to attract more investment and achieve a transition to clean energy. (New News Agency)
