Five countries including Algeria have been elected as non permanent members of the United Nations Security Council

On the 6th, the UN General Assembly elected Algeria, Guyana, South Korea, Sierra Leone and Slovenia as non permanent members of the UN Security Council. The non-permanent members of the Security Council are elected by secret ballot by the United Nations General Assembly, and candidate countries must obtain at least two-thirds of the total number of votes cast by the General Assembly in order to be elected. A total of 6 countries participated in the election, competing for 5 non permanent seats on the Security Council. Algeria, Guyana, South Korea, and Sierra Leone have no competitors. Slovenia and Belarus compete for a seat in the Eastern European region. In the first round of competition, Slovenia was elected with 153 votes and Belarus was defeated. Among the other four countries, Guyana received 191 votes, Sierra Leone received 188 votes, Algeria received 184 votes, and South Korea received 180 votes, all of which were successfully elected. The newly elected five non-permanent members of the Security Council will replace Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, and the United Arab Emirates for a two-year term starting from January 1, 2024. The United Nations Security Council has a total of 15 members, with China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States as permanent members, and the remaining 10 members as non-permanent members. The term of office of the non-permanent members is 2 years, and after election, 5 members are replaced annually and cannot be re elected. 10 non-permanent seats allocated by region: 3 in the African region; 2 each in Asia Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Western Europe, and other regions; 1 in Eastern Europe. The Security Council bears the responsibility of maintaining international peace and security and is one of the main organs of the United Nations. (New News Agency)
