The Secretary General of the United Nations calls for more inclusive and accessible services for people with autism

2023-04-03

United Nations Secretary General Guterres called on the international community on the 2nd to provide more inclusive and accessible services for people with autism. On the same day, Guterres said in his speech on World Autism Awareness Day that despite significant progress, people with autism still face social and environmental barriers in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These obstacles prevent them from fully exercising their rights and fundamental freedoms. Guterres said that more efforts are needed to promote inclusive education, equal employment opportunities, and create an environment that respects everyone. In this process, it is also important to recognize that families, caregivers, and the Internet play an important role in the lives of autistic patients. Guterres emphasized the need to recognize the positive and diverse contributions of people with autism to society and work together to build an inclusive and accessible world for all. Autism is a serious mental development disorder characterized by indifference to emotions, refusal to communicate, language development delays, repetitive and stereotyped behavior, and significant limitations in the range of activities and interests. Currently, autism is one of the fastest growing diseases in the world. In order to increase public awareness and understanding of autism spectrum disorders, promote early diagnosis, early intervention, and support for people with autism and their families, in December 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to designate April 2 each year as World Autism Awareness Day starting in 2008.
