How can the academic department become an academic community that coordinates similar disciplines

Author: Sun Hongbin (Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of Taiyuan University of Technology), on the new journey of promoting Chinese path to modernization, higher education, as an important carrier of the "trinity" of education, science and technology and talents, must meet the needs of the country and the times, shoulder the mission of strengthening the country, face the world's scientific and technological frontier and the "choke" technology field, speed up the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents, and produce major landmark scientific and technological achievements. The department system of university has a long history, but due to historical limitations, there are some misunderstandings and detours in the specific implementation. Based on the recent practice of the reform of the department system in Taiyuan University of Technology, this paper discusses my own understanding and thinking. Why should we carry out the reform of the department system? First of all, we need to strengthen the interdisciplinary integration. With the expansion of the scale of colleges and universities, the "fragmentation" of disciplines is becoming increasingly obvious. Disciplines are like a "shaft", and cross-integration has become a common problem. For local colleges and universities with advantageous disciplines, on the one hand, the leading role of advantageous disciplines is not fully played, and on the other hand, the support of relevant disciplines for advantageous disciplines is also insufficient. Taking Taiyuan University of Technology as an example, the "double first-class" discipline is the "green, clean and efficient development and utilization discipline group of coal-based resources", which is jointly constructed by one main discipline and five supporting disciplines. At present, the overall driving effect of these six advantageous disciplines on the whole school is not obvious, and the synergy and synergy between disciplines need to be strengthened. The second is the need to cultivate innovative talents. At present, higher education still focuses on professional training. Too narrow education leads to a single knowledge structure and thinking mode of students, which is difficult to cope with and solve complex scientific and technological and engineering problems, and to adapt to the new requirements of rapid economic and social development. The new technology, new industry, new business form and new mode emerging in the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation urgently need a large number of innovative talents with broad foundation and multi-disciplinary background, which poses a major challenge to the current higher education. At the undergraduate stage, breaking the boundaries of disciplines and cultivating innovative talents with "broad shoulders" have become the common consensus of current research-oriented universities. Thirdly, the need to promote organized scientific research. Scientific research has entered the era of big science. The scope and scale of many scientific and technological problems have been expanding, and the complexity has continued to increase. It is difficult to solve complex scientific and engineering problems by relying on a single discipline. To solve the major scientific and technological problems of "stuck neck", it is necessary to establish organized scientific research as the development of "two bombs and one satellite", and break through the pass and seize the pass in a planned and divided way in the mode of "big regiment operation". At present, there is still a lack of organized scientific research in colleges and universities, which needs to be promoted systematically. The "vertical shaft" of disciplines hinders the ideological collision between interdisciplinary scholars, and it is also difficult to form a "big army" in an organic way. In the face of some major national tasks, although some professors and scholars are willing to unveil the list, they have no choice but to give up because they are hard to find a scientific research "partner". The school department system can be regarded as a way to solve the above problems. Finally, it is the need to improve the modernization level of the governance system. The discipline-based management system of colleges and departments deepens the "vertical well" of disciplines. The system of academic departments can break the existing organizational structure of disciplines, promote the unification of academic evaluation standards and the sharing of academic resources, realize the optimization of internal governance system, and improve the modernization level of governance capacity.
