Walk fast for 11 minutes every day to reduce the risk of premature death

2023-03-02

A new large-scale analysis led by the University of Cambridge in the UK confirmed that if everyone's physical activity reached at least half of the recommended level, then one in ten premature deaths could be avoided. According to the study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine on February 28, moderate intensity sports activities such as walking for 11 minutes a day (75 minutes a week) are enough to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer. Cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke are the main causes of death worldwide. Physical activity, especially moderate intensity physical activity, can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. The British National Health Service recommends that adults take at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise or 75 minutes of high intensity exercise every week. In order to explore the amount of physical activity required to combat disease and premature death, researchers from the Epidemiology Department of the Medical Research Council of Cambridge University collected and studied cohort data from all published evidence. They reviewed the results reported in 196 peer-reviewed articles, covering more than 30 million participants from 94 large research cohorts. This is the largest analysis of the relationship between the level of physical activity and the risk of heart disease, cancer and premature death so far. The study found that in a broad sense, more than 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week has little additional benefit in reducing the risk of disease or premature death. However, 75 minutes of moderate exercise per week is enough to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 17% and cancer by 7%. For some specific cancers, the risk reduction is greater, such as head and neck cancer, osteomyeloid leukemia, myeloma and cardiac cancer, the risk reduction is 14-26%. For other cancers such as lung cancer, liver cancer, endometrial cancer, colon cancer and breast cancer, the observed risk was reduced by 3% - 11%. The researchers said that moderate activities are not necessarily what people usually think of as sports, such as running. Sometimes you just need to change some habits, such as trying to walk or ride a bike instead of driving to work or study places, or playing actively with children. Do the activities you like and easily include them in your weekly routine, which is the best way to make your body more active. (Xinhua News Agency)
