Erdogan: We can give Finland a different response Sweden will be shocked

2023-01-30

Although Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO at the same time, President Erdogan of Türkiye said that his country might agree with Finland's accession and not agree with Sweden's accession. Comprehensive Associated Press and Russian Satellite Network reported on January 29 that in a pre recorded activity video released on January 29, President Erdogan of Türkiye said that Türkiye might only approve Finland's accession to NATO. Erdogan said to a group of young people in Belagik province: "If necessary, we can give Finland a different response to its accession application. If we give Finland a different response, Sweden will be shocked." Türkiye accused Stockholm of being too tolerant of organizations it believes are terrorist organizations or threatening, including Kurdish organizations. Erdogan said that he had told the Swedish Prime Minister, "If you really want to join NATO, you must extradite these terrorists. If you do not extradite these terrorists, you are sorry." He said that Türkiye has provided a list of 120 people it hopes to extradite from Sweden. It is reported that in the context of the outbreak of the Russian-Uzbekistan war, Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO. On July 5, 2022, representatives of the 30 member countries of NATO signed the protocol for Finland and Sweden to accede to the Treaty, officially launching the process of NATO's northern expansion. According to the regulations, NATO can only recruit new members on the premise of "unanimous agreement" of 30 member countries. At present, Türkiye and Hungary have not officially ratified the accession of Sweden and Finland. The Swedish government recently approved two protests against Türkiye, first a demonstration in support of Kurds, and then allowed an extreme right-wing person to demonstrate near Türkiye's embassy in Sweden. After the above activities, Türkiye urgently summoned the Swedish ambassador to Türkiye to protest, and then announced to cancel the visit arrangement of the Swedish Defense Minister. Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on the 23rd that after the demonstrations near Türkiye's embassy in Sweden, Sweden should no longer expect Türkiye to support its accession to NATO. The Swedish "Express" reported on the 28th, quoting the Swedish Foreign Minister Bilstrom, that the process of Sweden's application for membership in NATO has been suspended. (Xinhua News Agency)
