"China's railway passenger cars are fast and advanced!" -- The Chinese train heading for Lahore

2023-01-10

At the beginning of January, at the railway station in Lahore, the capital of Punjab Province in eastern Pakistan, a train composed of wide-gauge passenger cars imported from China stopped beside the platform, and the brand-new carriage attracted the eyes of passing passengers. After boarding the train, Lei Song, the engineer of CRRC Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "CRRC Tangshan"), and Imran Jacob, the director of the vehicle inspection and repair department of the Lahore Station of Pakistan Railway Corporation, began to check the various setting parameters of the compartment control room to prepare for the trial operation of the passenger train in the near future. In late November 2022, the first 46 wide-gauge passenger cars and spare parts of the 230 passenger cars exported by CRRC Tangshan to Pakistan arrived in Pakistan. As an enterprise directly under the Ministry of Railways of Pakistan, Pakistan Railway Corporation is the owner of the project, and its company headquarters is located in Lahore. Lei Song, as the head of CRRC Tangshan to provide after-sales service at Lahore Station, flew to Karachi, the port city of southern Pakistan, with Chinese colleagues more than a month ago. After meeting with the technical personnel of Pakistan Railway Corporation, they went up to Lahore with the passenger train. "These passenger cars can travel on the railway track after arriving in Karachi." Lei Song said, "We have completed the line tests of small radius curve, gauge, train emergency braking at various speeds and passenger car running stability on many railway lines in the north and south of Pakistan with the passenger cars, and the test results are very successful." Su Weiyue, the full-time project manager and senior engineer of CRRC Tangshan Overseas Project Department, told Xinhua News Agency, The maximum design speed of passenger cars exported from this project is 160 kilometers per hour. According to the agreement between China and Pakistan, the remaining 184 passenger cars to be exported will be transported to Pakistan in the form of spare parts and raw materials. The Chinese technicians will be responsible for teaching the Pakistani personnel to complete the technical output of the production and assembly of passenger cars in Pakistan, thus realizing the first "product+technology" combination of China's 160 km/h railway passenger cars. Jacob told reporters that CRRC Tangshan invited 25 technical personnel of Pakistan Railway Corporation, including him, to China for training before the export of passenger cars. Lei Song was their trainer. "During the 22-day training, Chinese teachers not only taught us various theoretical knowledge, but also took us to visit the manufacturing workshop of Chinese railway passenger cars and learned the advanced technology of manufacturing passenger cars." Jacob said, "The railway passenger cars made in China are really fast and advanced!" Standing beside the gravel ballast outside the passenger cars, Wei Runlong, braking system engineer of CRRC Tangshan Company, also showed reporters the passenger car bogie specially designed and manufactured for Pakistan Railway Corporation. "Pakistan Railway adopts the 1676 mm wide gauge standard, and we specially designed the passenger car bogie with this gauge to make the passenger car perfectly fit the railway track of Pakistan Railway." Wei Runlong said, "We also used air spring damper and other technologies in the design to improve the comfort of passengers when riding on the passenger car." Gul, director of Lahore Bureau of Pakistan Railway Company, said in an interview with Xinhua News Agency, Pakistan-China technical cooperation has a long history. In the future, when this batch of passenger cars becomes the main train, it will significantly enhance the image of Pakistan's railway and become a new highlight of Pakistan-China cooperation.
