Break the three "myths" of American think tanks

2023-01-10

There are a large number of think tanks in the United States, many think tank scholars have outstanding eloquence, many think tanks report good packaging, various kinds of think tank activities are frequent and diverse, and media communication is often dazzling. These characteristics are important reasons for the "mythologization" of American think tanks in Chinese academic circles. However, if we look at American think tanks by some evaluation criteria, such as whether they really carry out professional and independent thinking and voice, whether they really have suggestions to help the country's long-term stability, and whether they really promote their own government to promote human development and global progress, then it is easy to find that the so-called "myth" of American think tanks has completely disappeared. From this perspective, the Chinese academic community should at least break the three "myths" of American think tanks. To break the myth of the independence of American think tanks, American think tanks often boast of "independence", while the Chinese academic community often admonishes itself to improve its independence. If only from the perspective of research methods, derivation process and data collection, think tank research certainly needs to improve its autonomy, and the "independence" of the research process should be one of the core values of think tanks. Otherwise, it is easy to fall into the trap of repetitive construction, insufficient innovation, copying others and even copying others. But on the other hand, the career goal of the think tank industry is to serve the government's decision-making consultation, and the inextricable connection with the government and daily frequent interaction are the proper meaning of the career. Think tank work is not done behind closed doors, let alone talk about "official" color change. The flaunt of absolute "independence" will either create the naive impression of self entertainment, or deliberately conceal the secret secrets with other organizations. According to the author's years of experience in communication and the disclosure of various public information, American think tanks are in a complex and complex social and political network system, and have a close relationship with political circles, enterprises and the media. From a political point of view, the "revolving door" mechanism makes the US think tanks and the government have an indistinct relationship of marriage and rotation. For example, think tanks sometimes have to cater to the government in order to improve their decision-making influence; For another example, in order to transport more reserve officials of the next government, we have to bet on a presidential candidate. From the perspective of funds, the donation of interest groups makes it difficult for American think tanks to make work that deviates from the donation goal. For example, when American think tank scholars publish opinions and report, they can not ignore the ideology, political preferences and value orientation of donors. From the perspective of media, in order to cater to the fixed audience of the media, American think tank scholars often succumb to sensational and extreme headlines and lose their due seriousness and objectivity. Although there are a few mavericks in the American think tank community, as the American scholar James Smith said in his book "The Broker of Ideas", "knowledge in a vacuum that has not been tested by the actual political problems in human life is ridiculous and nihilistic". American think tanks are not castles in the air or rootless trees, but closely related to their specific cultural, political and social environment. The Chinese academic community does not have to beautify its advantages of "independence". The mythical intellectuals who break the positive energy of American think tanks are often regarded as "social conscience", and think tank scholars are often regarded as "national think tanks", which should make positive contributions to national development and human progress. But in the past 10 or 20 years, "American think tanks have consciously or unconsciously put forward a lot of bad ideas to the American government
