2022-12-29

According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korean President Yin Xiyue is about to usher in his second year in office. He will further strengthen cooperation with the United States in the diplomatic and security fields, and strive to get South Korea Japan relations back on track. This means that the ROK will continue to pursue the diplomatic tone of maintaining the value of liberalism based on the ROK US alliance, and at the same time try to solve the unresolved problems between the ROK and Japan. According to reports, South Korean presidential officials said in a telephone interview on the 29th that the government will strive to further consolidate the global comprehensive strategic alliance in security, economy, technology and other fields when the ROK and the United States usher in the 70th anniversary of the alliance next year. US President Biden visited South Korea on May 21, 11 days after Yin Xiyue took office, and Yin Xiyue may return to the United States in 2023. The ROK military also discussed the implementation of large-scale ROK US joint firepower display by taking the 70th anniversary of the ROK US alliance as an opportunity. It is expected that the ROK, the US and Japan will further strengthen security cooperation. In terms of Korean Japanese relations, it is urgent to find a solution to the case of forced recruitment of Korean workers during World War II. The South Korean President's Office believes that only when relevant issues are settled can South Korea Japan relations take the "next step". The ROK government said that the ROK and Japan have been narrowing their differences of views through communication and work consultation, but the sentiment of the victims and the people should be taken into account in relevant matters. It is observed that the ROK Japan summit will be held only after the outline of the solution of the forced recruitment of Korean workers' claims has emerged. The President's Office said that the two sides have not discussed this issue at present. (Liu Xinshe)
