2022-12-22

At the invitation of President Biden of the United States, President Zelenski of Ukraine visited Washington on the 21st. While the United States announced a new round of military assistance to Ukraine, the two sides discussed at the White House about "the vision of how to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine". This is the first time that Zerensky has left Ukraine for a foreign visit since Russia launched a special military operation against Ukraine in February this year. During the meeting, both the United States and Ukraine mentioned the time node that the current Russian Ukrainian conflict has lasted for more than 300 days. When Zelensky arrived, the White House did not hold a welcoming ceremony, and neither side addressed the media. At the meeting of the Oval Office, Biden announced that the United States would provide Ukraine with a new round of military and humanitarian assistance totaling 2.2 billion dollars. The total amount of military assistance was 1.85 billion US dollars. In this batch of military aid, the United States will provide Ukraine with a set of Patriot air defense missile systems for the first time. Biden said that the US side will continue to strengthen Ukraine's self-defence capability, especially its air defense capability. After more than two hours of closed door talks, Biden and Zerenski jointly attended the joint press conference. When asked "which road the US and Ukraine will choose to end the war when the Russian Ukrainian conflict has entered a new stage", Zerensky stressed that "peace is not a compromise on Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity". Biden said that a "free, independent, prosperous and secure Ukraine" is the vision of the United States and Ukraine. "We all want to end this conflict. What we are discussing today is to continue to help Ukraine achieve success in the battlefield. If President Zelensky is ready to negotiate with Russia, he will also be able to achieve success." When answering questions from reporters, Zelensky also said that he hoped that this visit would convey the aspiration of "peace" to the American people, "I think this is the most important thing. Only when there is a war in your country can you understand this.". At about 8:30 that evening, Zelensky delivered a speech of about half an hour in the United States Congress. He thanked the United States for providing economic and military assistance to Uzbekistan, and said that such assistance was "still insufficient". Zelensky said that Ukraine "needs peace". Ukraine has prepared a peace proposal, which President Biden also supported. This week, the US Congress will vote on a new spending bill, including about $45 billion in additional emergency assistance to Ukraine. Since February 24 this year, the Biden government has cumulatively committed to providing Ukraine with military security assistance of about 21.2 billion dollars. According to the Associated Press, Zelensky went to the United States on the same day by US Air Force plane, and his stay in Washington was less than 10 hours. (Liu Xinshe)
