Iranian Foreign Minister: Iran is willing to complete the Iran nuclear negotiations according to the previous draft outcome

2022-12-21

On December 20, Iranian Foreign Minister Abdullahian said that Iran was willing to complete the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue held in Vienna, the capital of Austria, and resume the implementation negotiations according to the previously reached draft outcome. According to the website of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Abdullahian made the above statement when he met with the European Union's High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Borrell, in Amman, Jordan, the same day. Abdullahyan also said that in order to reach an agreement, the parties concerned should avoid politicizing the issue and adopt a pragmatic approach and make necessary decisions. Borrell said on social media that the two sides "agreed to maintain smooth communication and resume the implementation of the Iran nuclear agreement on the basis of the Vienna negotiations". It is reported that Kirby, the Strategic Communication Coordinator of the National Security Council of the United States, said the same day that the United States welcomed the communication between the European Union and Iran, but that resuming the implementation of the Iran nuclear agreement is not the current focus of the United States. In July 2015, Iran reached an Iran nuclear agreement with the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany. In May 2018, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the agreement, and then restarted and added a series of sanctions against Iraq. Since May 2019, Iran has gradually suspended the implementation of some provisions of the agreement, but promised to take "reversible" measures. Since April 2021, parties to the Iran nuclear agreement have held several rounds of talks in Vienna to discuss the resumption of US Iran compliance, and the US has indirectly participated in the negotiations. At the beginning of August this year, the EU submitted to the negotiating participants a "final text" on resuming the implementation of the Iran nuclear agreement. Iran and the United States subsequently exchanged written views on this text, and the negotiations have not made significant progress since September. (Liu Xinshe)
