Teachers and students, how to get rid of "tiredness"

2022-12-20

With the repeated COVID-19, new learning scenarios such as online learning and home learning face new challenges: the proportion of teachers and students' burnout has increased in different countries and regions of the world, and at the same time, other mental health problems of teachers and students are also increasing. Recently, the 2022 Teachers and Students Burnout Seminar of the online Sino Finnish Education Forum was held. The participants discussed the reasons why teachers and students' burnout has become a global trend, looked for effective measures and methods to prevent and alleviate it, and looked forward to the future of "teachers and students' health intervention". The reporter invited relevant experts to discuss this. In the Children's Health Care Center of the First People's Hospital of Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province, the doctors are consulting, examining and evaluating children with learning disabilities. Geng Yuhe's photography/bright picture burnout is a mental sub-health state, so we should avoid falling into the "burnout trap" Reporter: In the view of psychologists, "burnout is a psychological syndrome, a response to long-term stressors in work or study." According to an article, in 2021, two Finnish professors conducted a questionnaire survey on 4567 primary and secondary school teachers in Finland, and found that the job burnout of Finnish teachers was gradually rising. Why do you think this phenomenon occurs? Sana Reid (visiting researcher at the University of Helsinki, Finland): In fact, according to our research, the academic burnout of Finnish students is also gradually increasing at the same time. In view of the fact that the burnout of teachers and students in Finland is increasing year by year, I have summarized the reasons: while the education funds have been cut, several new phenomena have emerged, one is the continuous improvement of urbanization, the other is the influx of immigrants. These new phenomena mean that the differences and complexity within education are increasing. As a teacher, I have to face more and more complicated class situations. As students, they should also adapt to these new complex situations and school environments. In this case, if no more educational resources are invested at the same time, the pressure source of students and teachers will become more and more, and the proportion of burnout will become higher and higher. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the input of educational resources and funds to ensure that there are enough teachers, and teachers' treatment and income should be decent enough. At the same time, we should be prepared for the complex situation after the expansion of the city. As cities become larger and larger, the differences between schools and students will become more prominent. How to maintain the equality of schools or classes in this case will be an important challenge. Katarina Salmena Arno (Professor and Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Helsinki University, Finland): We recently put forward a summary framework to explain the causes of burnout. The main reason for burnout is that the requirements of the external environment exceed the resources that our psychology and environment can provide. These external requirements include not only the number and difficulty of tasks, but also social and interpersonal requirements, such as the repressed working (learning) atmosphere. The psychological and environmental resources include personal social emotional skills, family or peer support, institutional and technical resource conditions, etc. According to our framework, in fact, higher external requirements do not necessarily lead to burnout, which depends on the ratio of requirements and resources. If we still have enough resources and skills under the condition of high external requirements
