"Feel a Warmer China in Shared Development" -- the 5-year "Expo entry" of the least developed countries

2022-11-11

East Timor black pepper, Lao tea, wood carving of Central African Republic, Ethiopian coffee, these local specialties of the least developed countries, together with intelligent products such as humanoid robots and digital assembly lines of developed countries, appeared at the Fifth China International Import Expo, which aroused strong interest of many buyers and an endless stream of consultants and negotiators. Bailey, the executive director of the National Pavilion of East Timor, has organized the exhibition of the products of this country for many years, and witnessed the spread of East Timor coffee from unknown to "online celebrity" in China. She said that the Expo has led to closer trade cooperation and cultural exchanges between the two countries. "In the process of sharing China's development opportunities, we feel a warmer China". Since it was held for the first time in 2018, each session has attracted more than 100 countries, regions and international organizations to participate in the exhibition, and the accumulated turnover of the first four sessions has exceeded 270 billion dollars. There were 145 national, regional and international organizations participating in the Expo, 284 of the world's top 500 and leading enterprises in the industry, with a return rate of nearly 90%. The Expo has become a window for China to build a new development pattern, a platform to promote high-level opening, and an international public product shared globally. In order to allow more countries to share China's development dividend, the organizers of the Expo have invited the least developed countries to participate extensively since the first session, and provided two standard booths free of charge to each least developed country. During the Expo, they also held a special supply and demand matchmaking meeting to connect exhibitors and buyers from these countries. In 2019, the sponsor specially set up a venue in the country (region) center of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone to open national pavilions for countries in need to display their goods and investment projects all the year round. This year, the Expo also joined hands with many multinational institutions and industry associations to help underdeveloped countries organize delegations to participate in the Expo. Since 2018, more than 30 enterprises from more than 40 least developed countries have come to the Expo every year to seek business opportunities. For the least developed countries, the road to Expo is full of opportunities and surprises. The handmade carpet brought by Ali Faiz, the founder of Afghanistan Bilalu Trading Co., Ltd., who participated in the Expo for three consecutive times, has always been a popular commodity in the Expo. His booth is not dazzlingly decorated. The carpets all over the walls and floor are silent advertisements. He said: "The sale of a large handmade wool carpet can guarantee the life of an ordinary family for nearly a year. The Chinese market gives hope to many Afghans." Wang Wenhan, an Ethiopian coffee dealer, participated in the exhibition for the first time. He was busy introducing products and grinding coffee for customers to taste. In the morning, he received more than 30 guests. "Entering the Expo is a platform with international credibility. Ethiopia is the hometown of coffee. We are confident that more Ethiopians will benefit from China's big market through entering the Expo." East Timor's gains at the Expo go far beyond the scope of economic and trade cooperation. In 2018, this small country with an area of only 14,800 square kilometers and a population of about 1.3 million was invited to the Expo for the first time
