2022-11-04

Wuhan, the bank of the Yangtze River, and Geneva, the capital of international conferences, held a press conference on transnational connectivity at the 14th Conference of the Parties to the Wetlands Convention on the 3rd. Hu Yuanhui, Deputy Director of the International Department of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, said that during the conference, the secretariat of the Wetland Convention will issue certificates to 25 newly promoted "international wetland cities". At that time, China will occupy 13 of the 43 "international wetland cities" in the world, ranking first in the number of countries. "This is the highest achievement of urban wetland ecological protection." He said. This time, Hefei, Jining, Chongqing Liangping, Nanchang, Panjin, Wuhan and Yancheng were listed as the second batch of "international wetland cities". In 2018, Harbin, Haikou, Yinchuan, Changde, Changshu and Dongying were among the first Chinese cities to win this honor. The Wetlands Convention is an intergovernmental agreement dedicated to the protection and rational use of wetland ecosystems, which was first signed in Ramsar, Iran, in February 1971. At present, the number of Parties has grown to 172. The "International Wetland City" certified by the Convention enables more places to take more active actions to protect ecology and achieve sustainable development. The Chinese government acceded to the Wetlands Convention in 1992 and actively fulfilled its obligations under the Convention. Especially in the past 10 years, China has adhered to the concept of ecological civilization and green development, vigorously protected and restored wetland ecology and water environment, and fully demonstrated the image of a responsible ecological power. According to the latest survey results of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, since 2012, China has added and restored more than 800000 hectares of wetlands, including 64 international important wetlands, 29 national important wetlands and 1021 provincial important wetlands. In June this year, the Wetland Protection Law of the People's Republic of China was officially implemented. The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China released a clear signal that strengthening wetland protection is the theme of ecological civilization construction and the inevitable requirement of Chinese path to modernization. "The situation in China is encouraging." In an interview with Xinhua News Agency in Grang, Switzerland, Secretary General of the Wetlands Convention Musonda Momba said that when other parties see this leading role, they will understand that wetland protection is conducive to climate change and biodiversity conservation. The main venue will be set up in Wuhan from November 5 to 13. This is the first time that the conference is held in China. Lei Guangchun, chairman of the Science and Technology Committee of the Wetland Convention and professor of Beijing Forestry University, and other experts said that this reflected the affirmation of the international community on China's concept of ecological civilization. China deeply participated in the affairs of the Wetland Convention and the formulation of international rules, and contributed Chinese experience and Chinese programs to the global wetland conservation and restoration. In the early morning, tens of thousands of winter migratory birds in the international important wetland of Wuhan Chenhu Lake are foraging among the water plants filled with morning dew. Feng Jiang, a monitor, said: "In the past 10 years, the number of bird species in the sunken lake has increased from more than 160 to 277. It is hoped that in the next 10 years, the sunken lake will provide more scientific basis for international wetland cities and global wetland protection." (Liu Xinshe)
