The "Beixi" natural gas pipeline leakage event is full of doubts

2022-09-29

According to the report of Swedish television on September 27, the Swedish survey station detected two strong underwater explosions in the same water area where the "Beixi - 1" and "Beixi - 2" natural gas pipelines leaked the previous day. The report quoted Bjorn Lund, a Swedish seismologist, as saying that the explosions occurred at 0:03 and 17:04 GMT on the 26th, respectively. One of them was equivalent to a 2.3 magnitude earthquake. On the 27th, Russian President's press secretary Peskov said that the incident was unprecedented and very disturbing, and its nature was unclear. "The Kremlin is extremely concerned about it and needs urgent investigation". In the context of the protracted Russian Ukrainian conflict and the growing European energy crisis, the "Beixi" natural gas pipeline leakage incident is undoubtedly a further disaster. Observers here pointed out that the dispute between Russia and the United States and the West over the leak of the Beixi pipeline will become a hot spot in parallel with the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The picture is an aerial photo released by the Danish Ministry of Defense on September 27, showing a leak point of the "Beixi" natural gas pipeline. Xinhua News Agency reported that the "Beixi" natural gas pipeline project, which reflects the relationship between Russia and Europe, is a huge energy cooperation project connecting Russia and Europe. Line 1 and Line 2 were built in 2011 and 2021 respectively. The "Beixi" pipeline starts from Viborg, Russia, and crosses the Baltic Sea to Grifswald, Germany. On November 8, 2011, the "Beixi - 1" natural gas pipeline was completed. As a result, a new milestone of Russia Europe energy cooperation was opened. Taking Germany as an example, "Beixi - 1" not only greatly meets the domestic energy supply needs, but also effectively promotes the special political relations between Russia and Germany. In 2017, Germany imported 53 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia, accounting for 40% of Germany's total natural gas consumption. In the Ukraine crisis in 2014, especially after the outbreak of the Russian Ukrainian conflict in February this year, Russian European relations have turned sharply downward, and energy has become the focus of the game between the two sides. On August 31, Russia stopped supplying gas to Germany through the "Beixi - 1" natural gas pipeline for three days on the grounds of maintenance. On September 2, Gazprom said that the turbine could not operate normally due to multiple equipment failures, and "Beixi - 1" would completely stop gas supply indefinitely until the failure was eliminated. Compared with the successful operation of "Beixi - 1" for 10 years, the fate of "Beixi - 2" is more difficult: not only has the laying process undergone twists and turns, but even one cubic meter of natural gas has not been transmitted after completion. The total investment of "Beixi - 2" project is 9.5 billion euros, half of which is contributed by Russian Natural Gas Industry Co., Ltd., and 10% (i.e. 950 million euros) is respectively provided by French ENGIE Group, Austrian Oil and Gas Group, Royal Dutch Shell, German Uniper and German Wintershall. After the full load operation of the project, Russia will transport 55 billion cubic meters of pipeline natural gas to Europe every year. For a long time, the United States has been blocking the implementation of Russian European projects in every way, believing that they will deepen European countries' dependence on Russian energy, and at the same time damage Ukraine's economic and strategic security. On December 20, 2019, then US President Trump signed the "2020
