UN Secretary General Says Multiple Crises Encounter Endangers Sustainable Development Goals

2022-09-20

On the 19th, UN Secretary General Guterres said that the superposition of multiple crises threatened the realization of sustainable development goals as planned, and global development had reached a "decisive moment". Guterres called on the international community to redouble its efforts to push the world back to the track of normal development. In his speech at the third "Time for Sustainable Development Goals" high-level event held by the United Nations, Guterres said that conflicts and climate disasters, distrust and division, poverty, inequality and discrimination, rising food and energy prices, unemployment and income decline, large-scale migration and displacement, the continuing impact of the global epidemic, the lack of financing channels in the recovery process of developing countries and other difficulties and challenges, All these make the sustainable development goal "more remote". Guterres pointed out that to solve the problems of development, education, dignified work and full equality of women and girls, "we can no longer wait". Problems such as universal health care, climate action and biodiversity conservation cannot be "left to tomorrow". On these issues, we must not disappoint the young people and future generations. We must take immediate action. "Now is the decisive moment". Guterres urged the public and private sectors to increase investment, and hoped that the financial architecture would be reformed in favor of developing countries to provide financing and debt relief for developing countries. He also called on all countries to invest in health, education and other aspects to expand social security for all. Guterres also urged us to actively address the triple global crisis of climate destruction, biodiversity loss and pollution, support the "post-2020 global biodiversity framework", get rid of dependence on fossil fuels, and "start renewable energy transformation in all countries". President of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly also delivered a speech on the same day, saying that in the face of multiple crises in the world, it is more necessary than ever for the international community to rededicate itself to the goal of sustainable development. He said that the 17 sustainable development goals covered by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are the "to-do list" of the international community, which should also be the "task list" of participating leaders. In the coming year, the United Nations will hold many important conferences on climate change, biodiversity, water resources, disaster risk reduction and other issues to find solutions to related problems and crises. At the beginning of 2020, the United Nations launched the "Decade of Action" plan for sustainable development goals, and decided to hold a high-level event of "Sustainable Development Goal Moment" every year.
